I have tried to upgrade to SP4 (Win 2K) several times with no
success. When the upgrade checks my computer it stops and
advises that IE is running or in use by someone or some thing.
I've tried uploading the upgrade from IE6 and from FoxPro and
get the same result.
Must I order a CD and install it that way?

Is it? E.g. use Task Manager to see if iexplore.exe is listed
anywhere in the Processes tab.

If it's there and there is no corresponding entry in the Applications tab
or icon in the Taskbar there would be a strong possibility that your machine
is infected with malware. See others' tips in here or in the ie6.browser
newsgroup for how to identify and deal with that case.

If you're infected it is the OS which is affected not just IE.

Did you download the entire SP4 package or are you attempting to install
it from within Internet Explorer via Windows Update ?
The entire package is available on this page :
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000...4/default.mspx

If you're downloaded the entire package and are receiving error 0x0643
along with a message about IE running, and you did not open IE, then as
Robert has already pointed out, there's a strong likelihood that the
system is infected with malware.

Please let us know which method you have chosen to install SP4 ...
either via Windows Update with IE open, or, by downloading the entire
SP4 package. OR, if it was by another method.

I tried it only from the update. couldn't find the SP4 as an executable. I'll
go look for it now, and try loading that way.

OK, before I end this session I'll check the TM and see what's going on. Also
going to try downloading the entire pkg as mowgreen suggested.
tks,

OK, Internet Explorer is not listed in the process tab nor in the
applications tab.
There's an "explorer.exe" but I think that's the windows explorer.

No....I went to that site and that's the little darling I've been trying to
load..
The small file that supposed to blow up into a real live installation.
Sorry, didn't
mean to mislead you but I thought that WAS the update.

It's possible that you're getting a bogus error message for a different
condition. What does the install log show exactly?

Also, be aware that that update has a few undocumented (and unchecked!)
pre-req's associated with it. For example see, Dave Hawley's report
from last year:

http://groups.google.com/group/micro...e949fbb18d070a

Since then others have given indications that there may be even more
undocumented (and as far as I know, unknown) pre-req's for this update
yet to be diagnosed by another adventurous (or skilled) user. ; )

Good luck

OK:
1. I did a search for insta*.log and there were no entries for 2006.

2. I downloaded (again) SP4Express_EN.exe
3. clicked on the above file and got:
"Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 Setup Wizard"
4. Then below that:
"Inspecting current configuration"

5. The progress bar showed some activity then an error window showed up
it said...
SP4 Setup Error
"The file
c:\program files\internet explorer\connection wizard\phone.ver
is open or in use by another application.
Close all other applications and then click retry."

6. I went to the Task Manager and clicked on Applications tab.

7. Open tabs were "Download", Mozilla SP4 setup, and SP4 Setup.

8. I closed all the applications except the SP4 Setup, closed the TM and
went back to the installation screen and clicked on "Retry".
9. Nothing happened and now I'm typing this rply.

You want the Network installation package which is 129.2 MBs :
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo.../W2KSP4_EN.EXE

Sorry about any confusion. Once it's downloaded, sign off or disconnect
the system from the internet. Close Internet Explorer.
Here's the link for the Installation Read Me :
http://www.microsoft.com/Windows2000...4/readmesp.htm

Advise you to peruse that prior to installing SP4.
