I recieve this message when trying to run WU.
I have tried to delete contets of the warious folders as described in other
letters, but I was'nt able to delete the files - they were in use by an other
process - I had closed down all processes - after re-boot.
Also I have checked the regristry and all settings are correct.
What can I do?

Now I had success by installing each update manually, but I have lost the
update history! Any ideas on how to get the history back?

I have got my history back :-)
When WU didn't work it was reconmended that I deleded all files in
"Windows\Softwaredesribution\..". I kept the files in the bin, and now I
restored the file "datastore.edb# after having renamed the "new" file
created - just in cas action.

You can't get the history back because you deleted it.

But you can still check to see what is installed and what isn't installed.
Displays the list of all Windows updates (Service Packs and Hotfixes) installed on your local
computer.

From Microsoft - Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.
Performs a verification by running directly on your computer, and alerts you to any updates that are
not actually installed.

Well that was fortunate that you didn't empty the recycle bin.

Hi;

Your WU/MU History is just a list of "stuff" you have installed using that
process. It isn't anything to worry about if you lose it. (You would not
worry about a grocery list you made for a shopping trip in December 2005,
right? <g>) Deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder is often a means for
correcting problems, and the loss of the WU/MU/AU History shouldn't be a
major concern when faced with those errors.

IOW, I recommend you boot back into Safe Mode and delete the
SoftwareDistribution folder once again. That may help to resolve the
0X80070003 issue (and others related that you aren't seeing yet).

Hi;

In order to delete those files/folders safely, you must either boot into
Safe Mode or manually stop the WU/MU service that is protecting them. Since
you got the error you mention (file in use) the you didn't do that.
Sometimes we have no idea beyond the WU/AU service what is "attached" to any
of those files, since an install may have been started and stalled using one
of them. Thus it is almost always best to boot into Safe Mode to delete
that folder.

I suggest you boot into Safe Mode, delete the SoftwareDistribution folder,
and then rename C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log to C:\Windows\UpdateLog.OLD (a
new .log will be created). Then boot back into Normal Mode and visit
http://update.microsoft.com/microsof...ult.aspx?ln=en Be sure
to watch for the yellow bar in IE asking to install ActiveX controls, and
let those happen.
