Hi, I am getting this error. I click "Install Now" to get the latest
Windows Update Software. It downloads, copies, and gets to 72% done
regestering it, and then fails. All it says is "Windows Update has
encountered an error and cannot display the requested page. You may find the
following resources helpfull...." and it has " [Error number: 0x8007003] "
in the upper right hand corner.

I have tried both fixes that people have suggested in other posts, and
neither worked. In both cases, the files were present on my computer, and in
the right folders.

The problem may have to do with the fact that I recently had to reinstall
windows. Bofore this, I had XP Pro installed, with SP1, and everything
worked fine. Then I screwed something up, and ended up doing a repair
install of Windows. Now I am stuck with this error. I have yet to install
SP1 again, as I can't get the Windows Update to work.

If anyone knows any other way to fix this, or any other problem I might
check, I would appreciate it.

Hi

I suggest you install SP2 instead of SP1 , using the full SP2 installer
instead of Windows Update to install the service pack.

SP2 is available at the Microsoft Download Center
(standalone "network" version, 266 MB):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...5-9e368d3cdb5a

(disregard the "intended for IT professionals and developers" part,
it can be used on a single computer as well)

If you really want SP1 instead of SP2:

You will find Service Pack 1 for WinXP under Network Installation here
(a 134 MB download, same file for Pro and Home):
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...1/default.mspx

If you do not have broadband at home, but you have at work or you have
friends that have it, you can download it there and burn it to a CD.

If you think that the download is to large, you can get the same file
on a CD from Microsoft (a lot of computer magazines currently also
have the CD included).

The Windows XP SP2 CD order point:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...s/default.mspx

You should clean out this folder (WU5's temporary download
folder) to get rid of temporary installation files from
your previous canceled installation:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

For folders you can consider deleting and other disk cleanup tips
after a successful SP2 installation, take a look here:

http://groups.google.com/groups?selm...TNGP15.phx.gbl

Before installing SP2, you should take a look at the
following sites:

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/s...hattoknow.mspx

How to successfully install Windows XP Service Pack 2.
http://www.fixyourwindows.com/winxpsp2install.htm

Service Pack Installation Checklist

Please take a look at this Microsoft knowledge base article as well:

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=885627

*Important* part from the link above:

If you have T.V. Media from Total Velocity Corporation installed, or
your processor is a Intel P4 Prescott with C-0 stepping, you should
not install SP2.

Intel P4 Prescott processors came out February 2004, so if your
computer is older than that, this is not an issue for you. Also, if
you have a Dell, IBM or HP, this is not an issue.

If you suspect/know you have an Intel P4 Prescott processor, take a
look at the two following Web sites for what you need to do/have to
be able to install SP2 on the computer:

http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=7447
http://cquirke.mvps.org/sp2intel.htm

Newsflash:

Adware T.V. Media Program Removal Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=886590

and

Microsoft have now released a fix for the problem where SP2 fails to
boot after installing it in a PC with the Prescott or a Celeron D CPU
(or fails to install in the case of slipstreamed cds). The problem is
described here:

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=34535

and the download for the fix is available here (install it before you
install SP2):

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en

Also, if you have a Dell Dell Inspiron 1150 or 2650, you might get a
slow running system after installing SP2, take a look at this thread
for more on this:

I ended up totaly formatting my drive and reinstalling Windows XP Pro. I
have now been able to go to the Windows Update site and install every update
that there is, with the exception of SP2. At the moment I do not want to
install SP2, so I just downloaded and installed SP1.

Anyway, I got all the other updates, but my computer is still doing
something wierd. If I right-click on "My Computer" and go Properties, and
check the Auto Update tab, it says I have it enabled. But when I go
Start/Run/Services.msc and check Auto Update, it is dissabled and stopped. I
then set it to automatic and start it, and it works fine. However, each time
I restart my computer, it stops and dissables it again.

It is getting to be very annoying. Does anyone know how to solve this?

Thanks
