sorry for bad message - both KB971633 and KB961371 updates fail to install
with the subject error. My system is
-- Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600)

One of the most common causes of this error code is the Anti Virus and Anti
Spyware software programs running on the computer.

You can try turning them off and then try the updates again. Keep the
firewall on though.

Kudos and thanx TaurArian. After I stopped 'Spybot Search and Destroy' and
re-applied the two updates, they both installed correctly. The anti-spyware
program was preventing the registry from being updated.
