Using genuine XP home SP2, Norton 360 deactivated, Internet security set to
medium.

Try running Wndows Updater as normal (it's worked for years) get this
message:-
Files required to use Microsoft Update are no longer registered or installed
on your computer. To continue:

Register or reinstall the files for me now (Recommended)
Let me read about more steps that might be required to solve the problem

I select the first optin and it seems that some software is boing downloaded
and registered but then I get:-

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

I have run the Genuine Windows Advantage software as recommended and checked
that my registry settings are correct for Update and that I have admin access.

Stilll not working. Here are the last 20 lines of the windows update log:-

I found an easy way to resolve this problem. Fortunately I image my system
disk every month. I restored my C drive from 2 weeks ago, ran Windows update
and everything worked perfectly. WGA was not the issue, just trying to run
windows update was the issue.
