Currently have XP Home SP1, I have about 25 or so Security updates that I
have been trying to install via Windows Update, but they always fail with
x8007005. I tried to skip just upgrade to SP2, but I get the same error so it
looks like either a file or a registry entry has some permissions problem. My
WindowsUpdate.log contains the following:

(i've cut a little to make it easier to read)

Windows Patch download for UpdateId =
{D3E34751-8A67-4226-8A9B-7FDB420021A8}: selected action is download express
(delta).
AU checked download status and it changed: Downloading is not paused
AU setting pending client directive to 'Download Progress'
Updateci: WinSEUpdateHandler::_Inventory: Installer returned 0x5 (5)
FATAL: UH: 0x80070005: Inventory failed
..
..
..

I've looked at dozens of postings on this site that reference 80070005 and
tried several things, but no luck. It sure seems like this must be a simple
permissions error as the update attempts dont even really start to download
anything, the update process fails immediately, seem like nothing is even
downloaded. Any help would be greatly appreciated. thx.

Before someone refers you to steps that you've already done, please
inform us of the " several things " already attempted.

I've too have been trying to get at this problem for six months, but I've
narrowed it down (in my case) where the SP2 install fails and Access Denie[s]
when it gets to "cmsetACL.dll".

I tried the regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT fix described
in this group, and hopefully did it correctly, but it did not work for me.
It involved creating a new user named "Everyone" which was granted full
access. I rebooted and attempted to install SP2 again, but it failed just
the same.

AOL is installed with its Security Center and McAfee, but I believe I
disabled them. I've even tried knocking any processes that I could identify
in the Task Manager, but it's had no effect.

I could make this a new thread, but I accumulated over 30 critical updates
and finally got a bunch of them installed anyway instead of waiting to
succeed with SP2. I'm trying to avoid wiping my (wife's) hard drive like the
local techs keeping telling her they have to do.
