I've read through the messages and ideas on this problem, nothing has worked
for me as yet. Has anyone found an easy reliable fix to this problem??

I've tried M$ with no success!

I use AntiVirus Kit which is a double engine package based on Kaspersky and
Bit Defender so no NOD in sight!

Cheers

Short answer from me..Not yet :-) but still digging, the error is quite
consistant as I have broken both production computers running W2K SP4.
Antivirus is Symantec Corportate Edition version 8.1.1.139 Scan engine 4.2.0.7

Also after deploying the update I cannot start the Automatic Update service
either, crashing out with an error 2147746310, reseaching that thread as like
you have not been able to find the exact cause to spawn 0x8007041D

I am running the same antivirus version and engine on my single XP
Professional SP2 machine and it has had zero issues which does not point to a
AV problem IMHO.

Hi,

Error 2147746310 is 0x80040206 (hexadecimal)

This is what I have on the 0x80040206 error:

<quote>
EVENT_E_INTERNAL ERROR
There will be event messages in Application/System log regarding
the errors.
</quote>

You might want to take a look in the eventlog (Application and
System) and see if that give you some clues.

Cheers Torgeir, all solved for me at least :-) The reverse tracking idea
through the event log system area put me on the path. Essestially the BITS
service was failing to start because a dependacy service it relied on being
System Event Notification was disabled, why ? I have no idea but hey
switching it from disable to automatic solved all my windows update problems
and the 0x8007041D error is fixed.

People experienceing this error should forget the antivirus thread fro M$
its a red herring, start looking at at the Background Intellegent Transfer
Service and its dependant services.

Good Luck all, cheers to Torgier /salute

still not getting anywhere, MAC is becoming a real option!!!

This is a real pain, BITS is started etc as per other posts.
Will try clearing system restore, uninstalling AV (even though not NOD) and
trying again.

ok I've followed tips from other threads, I've uninstalled SP2, uninstalled
my AV etc still same error. I don't want to have to reinstall XP, too much
other stuff to reinstal after that. Surely M$ must have a fix by now, this
isn't a new problem!!

Has anyone got a simple fix for this error?

cheers

Is your COM+ Service on automatic activation?

That solved the Problem for me.

At least as I can see the Problem has nothing to do with any
Virusscanners, but with the fact that without COM+ the intelligent
background download could not be started and without that the
automatic update isn´t working.

Good luck,
