I am having problems with my PC (Windows XP) and have run all my scans etc to
check for viruses and it has found nothing. (Ad-aware, Symantec,
Spywareblaster also cleared out cookies and tif's, done PC disk clean up and
defragged).

My PC will start up but is then dead and I can't do anything. I can't even
shut down - I have to switch it off manually (and even to do that I have to
press and hold the button for about 10 seconds before it actually shuts
down!!). I have left this msg whilst in safe mode.

When I try to update Windows in safe mode I get this 0x8007043C error code.
Have read all the questions and answers on here and the reply is always the
same - you can't do it in safe mode.

When that's the only way I can do anything at all with my PC, how else can I
sort this problem pls???

If updating Windows won't help to sort out my PC, any other ideas other than
sending it away to get it fixed??

All help greatly appreciated.

Computer Stops Responding with a Black Screen When You Start Windows

Your problems do not appear to be related to WU. Perhaps you could post to a more
appropriate NG or in the alternative, take the computer to be fixed.

I am having this exact same problem. What did you find to be the problem
with your computer? How did you fix it?

0x8007043C
Means: ERROR_NOT_SAFEBOOT_SERVICE.
Translation: You need a service which is not available in safe mode.

I understand the meaning of the code. I need to know if ARichards found out
what was causing his problems in normal mode. All of his symptoms are the
same as mine. I've run all the same things to try and correct the problem
and have had no luck. I received the code when trying to run a security
download in safe mode. I cannot operate my computer except in safe mode
right now. Any insite would be appreciated!

For the benefit of others - "dmac" has posted to a thread that was made on
18th October 2006 and is awaiting a response from the OP.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/e...1-6857e1b764ce

IMHO, "dmac" start a new thread and maybe post to a more appropriate
newsgroup for your problem and you may get a response that is helpful.

I know exactly what you mean, I have found zero responses to solve this
issue, my machine just winked out, now, like you it will only boot in safe
mode or with networking.
Having read other replies, its not about where you put this problem its
about Microsoft resolving this for you, you are like me, a consumer, having
bought their software, something has gone wrong, why is it so difficult for
Microsoft to resolve this, I have tried to contact direct, but to no avail?
Is it that XP is now defunct by Microsoft, we have to purchase Vista or Win 7?
Lastly, I fail to see the rationale of taking the machine to be fixed at
ones own expense?
Hope you got it resolved, if you did, please tell me what you did?
Have a good day
Kev
