Through our logon script we set our user’s home page set to Sharepoint portal
server 2003 “my site”, and from there we were opening windows update form the
tools menu in IE. After a month of troubleshooting Windows update with
0x8007045A and 0x800A138F we discovered that if we go directly to
windowsupdate using the icon provided with XP. It works!!!

Go figure...

Let me know if this is helpful to anyone.

Hi,

The error 0x8007045A occurs when trying to install updates from
http://V5.Windowsupdate.Microsoft.com.

Please check if the client computer has accessed a shrarepoint site
previous to accessing the Windowsupdate site

The user may have an older non compatible version of Riched.dll on the
system. The problem occurs because riched.dll is attached to the
Iexplore.exe process. This does not permit the version used by the
Windowsupdate site to be attached to the process.

To fix this issue try to change the homepage settings in Internet Explorer
to someother site besided the sharepoint site (http://comanyweb in the case
of SBS2003). Then close all the instances of Internet Explorer and then
open a new instance of the browser and browse to the windowsupdate site.

Hope it helps!

Thank You,

Harish.G
