I have XP Home edition and Office 2002. I downloaded the Office SP Service
Pack 3 and attempted to install it. It failied with error code 0x80070643.
I have tried to read some of the posts containing this error code, but I can
not figure out how to resolve this. I do have my original Office CD's, but I
don't know how to identify the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility that is
referenced in some of the posts. I would appreciate some direction in fixing
this.

You'll need your original Office CD (and Product Code) before attempting any fixes.

And thanks for the help.

The 0x80070643 error is usually caused by a Windows Update download
catalog database-file that has been corrupted.
Step-by step instructions to fix this:

First go to Start->Run. Type CMD, press enter and you'll see a command
prompt.

Type the following there. Of course, press Enter after each line:

net stop cryptsvc
ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 renamed_catroot2
net start cryptsvc

You need admin-rights to do that renaming.
After you've done that, try updating again.

JK.....I think this worked.

I did just as you described and reinstalled the update. I got a message
that the update was successful. I am getting ready to restart my computer.

Thanks for the help!

Hello,
I have tried everything listed in those articles with the exception of
re-installing office completely.

This really isn't an option for me.

I am having this problem COMPANY WIDE.

As of yet, I have not been able to apply SP2 on any computer.

All of these computers had Office installed through Group policy software
dist.

The disks that MS. sent me had Office on one disk, and SP1 on a seperate
disk.

I slipstreamed SP! into the Office MSI and created a new MSI as well as the
MST for a few simple customizations.

Install (Upgrades) went through smoothly on every computer.

Office SP2 is the only Update that will not apply.

Please help!

Larry

Just for curiosity: Did you try the "rename catroot2"-method on a single
PC?
