I now think that the answer to everyones problems update Microsoft Office
2003 updates, i.e. error code 0x80070643 (and maybe more)
is due to a missing entry in the registry file.
I have spent about 8 hours (over a period of a week) trying to fix this and
knew it was related to the use of a Registry Cleaner.
I use RegCure as a registry cleaner.
I have 3 PCs at home, all running this software and all failing when trying
to update Office 2003 updates.
I restored the registry on one of the PCs back to before I run RegCure, and
all was then OK.
I then read this article (Many Thanks avarg3) and identified the missing
registry entry.
I added this entry to the 2nd PC and all worked fine.
The problem is that some Registry cleaners remove an entry in the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\Deliv ery\SourceEngine\Downloads
Structure
which contains the original install path for the office products.

Read the article and follow what it says and you problems will ( I am sure
of this) be resolved.

Here is the link to which mentions this article
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...xp=&sloc=en-us

I will be informing REgCure of this issue.

I hope you all find this posting helpful.
I only wish that someone at Microsoft had know about this "potential" fix
sooner.

Best Regards

Again, many thanks for your follow up. Just applied the change to the
registry and the updates applied straight away.
I have Office Pro 2003, Project 2003 and Visio 2003 installed. It was the
Visio product which had the missing 'Path' key.

If user MowGreen (MVP) is still monitoring this thread, it would be a great
idea if Microsoft added details of this error code (0x80070643) to the KBE
884298. It would have saved me loads of time, and about 50 support emails
with MS. There must be a large number of people getting this problem I would
think.

I also noticed, when looking up the GUID as described in the associated KBE,
that the key 'InstallSource' for the Office Pro 2003 InstallSource was blank,
whereas the other two GUIDs had something like D:\MSOCache\All
Users\90000409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9\. This seems to make no difference
to anything.

ALAS... it worked for me too. I had not used any type of reg cleaner... but
the registry entry for the PATH was missing. When I added it as in your
instructions.... the updates loaded. Thanks for your help!

Hmmmmmmmmmmm .... the registry entry for the PATH WAS MISSING ?
" Good gawd almighty " Little Richard
So it's not exclusively a recently cleaned registry that will throw the
643 error code then.

Frankly, in over X years of updating, the only time I could not get 2
updates installed was due to having deleted the installation files for
the Word and Excel Viewers. IIRC, the error code 1603 came up then.
Unfortuantely, it's a generic error message that can be related to the
removal of the installation file from the original installation path.

The Microsoft Update Services MVPs have no one to contact at MS any
longer to inform them of Bunster's findings. Apparently one has to be an
MVP in a Small/Medium Business or Enterprise competency for MS to care.
