0x80072EE2 with new computer

New Dell running XP won't run Windows Update. I get error 0x80072EE2. I've
followed the recommended troubleshooter and added the URLs to trusted sites.
I'm running AVG Free and Windows Firewall, but even with both turned off, it
still won't work. It checks for updates and then after a minute or so, gives
me the error message.

Any help is most appreciated. THanks

> New Dell running XP won't run Windows Update. ..

Is it a brand-new computer or a "new for you" computer?

Right-click on My Computer and select Properties: What version of WinXP is
displayed in the resulting tab (e.g., Windows XP Service Pack 1a)?

Did the machine come with a Norton or McAfee free-trial preinstalled by
Dell? If so, did you uninstall it before you installed AVG Free?

Have you seen/tried the Resolutions in either of the following KB
articles?...

1. You may encounter temporary connection-related errors when you use
Windows Update or Microsoft Update to install updates:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

2. Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from
Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new
Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installation:

Issue Resolved. It must have been a hiccup in either my system or WU,
because after repeated attempts, it finally went through. This was the first
WU on this computer (brand new). I did nothing particular to get it to work,
just kept trying over the course of an hour or so. Thanks for the help.

YW. Others have reported the identical behavior today, too. It's a mystery
to me.

Please post the answer to the "mystery" when found. Am having same problem
with Win XP SP3 (and since Nov) --and note that I too have AVG Free which is
interesting.
