Hello,

I have Windows XP proffesional incl. SP2 and all updates until a few weeks
ago.
Since that time i get errorcode 0x80072EE7 everytime i acces the Windows
Update Site.
I allready tryed all solutions documented on the microsoft help-sites like
stopping the updateservice and restarting it, renaming update-directories in
the windows directory and even cleaning the registry. Nothing helped ...
I remember having a simular problem a few years ago (can't remember the
erorrcode) and it was solved by just typing something in the commandline if i
remember correctly.
Also since a few weeks, Windows defender also stopped updating its
definitions automaticly. I can only update them manualy by downloading the
definitions as an exe-file.
Can anyone help me with this problem ?

Thanks in advance ;-)

First Windows Defender can not update.
Now Windows can't update.

Question: Has the installed antivirus been kept updated and has the
sysetm been scanned on a *regular* basis for the presence of 'unwanted
guests ' ?

If the answer to the above is yes, then see if registering these files
resolves the connection issue with the update site:

Open a Command Prompt ... Start > Run > type in
cmd
Click OK or press Enter
At the prompt, type these commands in pressing Enter after *each one*

net stop wuauserv
regsvr32 cdm.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll
net start wuauserv
exit

Reboot the system.
See if it can access the update site now.

Hi,
I did all those things you discribe.
It was not succesfull.
But meanwhile i found the solution elsewhere on these boards.
There must be some kind of malware wich plants his own DNS-serveradresses
in the lan-connection settings.
I just had to enable "automatic...." again and the problem was solved.
Thanks anyway for your assistance.

Apparently, not or, the installed AV did not protect the system adequately.

Since 'some kind of malware' was the cause of the issue, I *strongly*
post to a reputable anti-malware forum so you can determine, as much as
possible, that the system is now clean. The malware you speak of brings
other malware with it, it's just not a fluke thing.
Please read the guidelines of the forum of your choice prior to posting
there:
