0x80072EFD error just after new xp installation

I have tried all common solutions in:
http://www.updatexp.com/0x80072efd.html
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941/en-us

I have no firewall or internet security installed (yet), so this is not the
reason.

The xp-installation is from the harddrive (pre-installed) on my ibm t41, by
running the "recreate factory contents" on startup. I did this after getting
the pc back from repair, where my motherboard was changed - can this be the
reason?
That xp is faulty due to the new hardware? Or can the preinstalled xp
version be faulty?

(there were no problems before the re-install)

Do anyone have a solution i havent tried??

I have tried all suggestions from these pages several times.

Then what is there to do??

I have just tried to run a repair of xp by using another CD, but i still get
the same error.. Is there any chance that it can be a hardware-problem?

Go to Start > Run > type in

winver

Click OK
Which version of Windows/ what Service Pack level is at ?

Was the memory or Hard Drive tested for issues before the
> "recreate factory contents" on startup
was run ?

Open the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory (folder) and
poste the last 40 or so lines from it, please.

It is XP (pro) version 5.1, SP2

The original installation (from the harddrive) was with SP1, but I
downloaded SP2 manually to see if it could help.

If have also tried making a repair of my XP by using another XP pro CD, but
without effect.

Originally when i started getting hardwareproblems, microsoft suggested
(after blue-screen error-message and restart) that it could be caused by
RAM-problems.
I ran windows diagnostic memory tool as well as "PC-doctor" from the
ibm-menu at startup - but without finding anything, except for 1 or 2 cases
of freezing during the test, making restart necessary.

At the same time, there were periods of black screen on startup, and
therefore the original reason to the memory-problems whas thought to be due
to system-board error. After the repair, the system has been stabile - the
only problem seems to be related to updating.

The harddrive was not tested for issues before the recovery, but after the
changing of the systemboard a genereal system test found no errors.

The issue is the proxy server shown here :

The system is NOT bypassing the list <(null)>

Either remove the proxy from IE as described in step 6 here:

IF no proxy is being used, suggest you download and install this update:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842773/
Scroll down to ' How to download and install the update package that
includes BITS 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 for Windows XP ' and click the
' Download the WindowsXP-KB842773-x86-enu.exe package now. '
link. Save the update, close the browser, and then install it.

So I do not get the "direct acces (no proxyserver)" response - only the

Is that the same - or the reason that I still can not update?

If so, how do i remove the proxyconfiguration?

The update 842773/ did not solve it.
I have also tried installing a whole new XP from a product recovery cd - but
this other version has the same issue.
Trying another internet acces point hasnt changed anything either.
I have got a few days left of my 3 year warranty - but this is most likely
to be a software-only problem, right?

I don't believe so. Direct access (no proxy server). is all that comes
up on my system, XP Pro SP2.
This registry subkey

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CurrentVersi on\Internet
Setting\Connections\WinHTTPSettings

does not even exist on my system. It should read

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Internet
Settings\Connections\WinHTTPSettings

Notice the Windows after Microsoft.
Please check the same subkey as above, and then check the one that is
listed for your system at

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\CurrentVersi on\Internet
Setting\Connections\WinHTTPSettings

Was this system on or is it on a network ? It appears as though it's
hardcoded to obtain updates from a network server.

More importantly, have you checked in Internet Options to see if a proxy
is listed ? That setting appears to override all others.
Open Internet Options from the Control Panel, click the Connections tab.
Click the LAN Settings button to see if a proxy is listed.
Also, check to see if a Virtual Private Network settings is listed. If
yes, then click the Settings tab to see if a proxy is there.

Finally, check the HOSTS file located in WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc
to ensure that no proxy settings are listed there.
