Hello,

I've been trying everything to get WindowsUpdate to work again, but no one
seems to have documented the specific problem I'm having. I'm running
Windows XP Pro SP2. I have installed ALL updates (manually). I run
ZoneAlarm Pro 6 (up to date) and McAfee VirusScan Pro v9.1 (up to date). I
am on a home computer connected with Zen Internet (UK) on a Netgear 108 Mbps
Super Wireless ADSL Router (DG834GT) (I have tried another wireless router
and I know of the exact same problem on a machine with a normal ADSL
router).

When I go to WindowsUpdate (version 6, latest one), I can view the site
without a problem, I can select Custom or Express without a problem and I
can normally search for updates and see them without a problem (currently I
need to download Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130) and
cannot get any further). I can select what updates I want to download and I
can select to download them but then problem occurs when the updates
download. I get the Installing Updates dialog box, I see the list of updates
in the window in the middle, but every updates comes up with failed! at the
end of it. I close the window and view my update history and every update
every time is says

Installation Failure

Error Code: 0x80072F78
Try to install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources.

Nothing specific and nothing helpful at all. The WindowsUpdate
Trouble-shooter does even have the code '0x80072F78'!! :-(

I can't find anything that helps on the MS support page. But I have added
the WU sites to my trusted sites: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=836985.

I have tried to deleted the C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\ folder, but
cannot delete a few files - what files are the important ones to delete?

Can anyone please help?

Kol
