0x8007F007 - setup could not find update.inf: NO SOLUTION

Hi,

I've been trying to install XP x64 SP2 for a couple of weeks now and I've
tried all the standard fixes, including those listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

Interestingly, I've also re-installed Windows and attempted to install SP2
from a file as the very first action after install. I still get the message
"setup could not find the update.inf file needed to update your system".

Help would be superb - I'm starting to panic about my exposure to past
security issues!
