I installed around 37 updates yesterday on top of SP2. Today wnen I try to
install a few more (both high and other) I download fine, but the installs
all fail with a 0x80090017 error. There is no hit in the KB for that error.
Any suggestions? Thanks very much.

Yes, back out updates until the problem goes away.
They obviously have some bad updates.
I'm still hosed.

it was one of these updates:

KB910347
KB905915
KB890830

that caused the problem

Give this a shot. Go to Start, Run, type in

net stop wuauserv

Click OK.

Show hidden files, folders, and system files :
http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html

Navigate to WINDOWS\Software Distribution\Download

Delete the contents of that folder. Also, delete the contents of

WINDOWS\Software Distibution\EventCache

and

WINDOWS\$hf_mig$

Go to Start, Run, type in

net start wuauserv

Click OK.
Empty the Recycle Bin. Restart the system and revisit Windows Update.
Does that resolve the issue ?

Windows installer 3.1 has serious problems.
I am finally back, but cannot install that or any updates after that.

I would uninstall thise updates until they fix the issue.

Well thanks Tom and MowGreen for the suggestions, but I am still not
updating. I tried MowGreen's suggestion first and that didn't change things.
I don't see where I can back out the updates, so I can't really "try" that.

Open the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINDOWS directory. Scroll down
towards the bottom for the most recent entries. Look for an error code
associated with the latest install failure and post it here.

Or, right click My Computer on the Start Menu or the Desktop, choose
Manage. Click the plus sign next to Event Viewer. Click on System.
In the right frame, under Type, look for Warning and under Source,
Windows Update Agent. What you're looking for is Warning AND Windows
Update Agent. When you locate it, click the Copy button ( to the right
of Computer: )and post it back here. Here's a sample from my system (It
was not labeled Warning, though )

If you would, could you post the resolution back here, Ken ? It *may*
help out others with the same issue.
And, you have a great 2006, too.
