"Jim Tate",
I am sorry that you have encountered this issue. There is a general log for
all of your windows update downloads. Would you mind opening it, copying
and pasting the latest and most relevant lines from that log back here to
the thread?
Here are the step by step procedures to do that:
On Windows XP:
1. Close all Internet browsers, but maintain connection to the Internet
2. Open a single Internet Explorer (IE)browser
3. On the menu bar in this browser window, click Tools
4. Look now at the system clock, and wait for the next minute to pass
5. Quickly click the "Windows Update" link.
6. Allow the site to fail, assuming that it will.
7. Close the IE window.
8. Click Start
9. Click Run
10. Type: "%WINDIR%\Windows Update.log" (do not forget the quotes or the
space)
11. Click OK
12. Next, when the log has opened, scroll all the way to the bottom.
13. Ensure this is the case by clicking anywhere inside the log and typing
the <CTRL> and <End> keys.
14. Now that you are at the bottom of the log, scroll back in time the hour
and minute you remembered from step 4..
15. At the very beginning of the line, select everything to the end of the
log by clicking and dragging down and to the right.
16. When all is selected, copy this part of the log.
17. Reply back to this posting.
18. In your reply, pasted the copy you made a moment ago.
19. Please also tell us what update you were attempting to install.
Sincerely,
Pat Walters [MSFT]
