0x800A0046 error - Tried all previously suggested solutions

I have tried all of the previously suggested solutions listed against this
error (0x800A0046) and none of them have worked. I do not have SP2 installed,
still SP1 with the last update run on 27/08/2004, this worked fine so presume
it was an update released post this date that has caused the problems. Any
help is very much appreciated.

Can you verify that the user account you are now using is not part of the
Guest group? And that same account has full Admin privileges throughout the
system?

Have you tried creating a new Admin-level account to see if you still get
error 0x800A0046 when using that new account?

All XP systems went from V4 to V5 about then. I think.

Tried creating a new Admin user and double checked that it was only a
'Member of' the "Administrators" group, it didn't work. I am using the V5
updating mechanism.

FYI, I was having the same problem. The second link Sky gave
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=883821

Had the following command to enter at a dos prompt which fixed the problem
for me.

sc sdset wuauserv
DA;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLO CRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRP WPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

(enter as all one line).

After this, I was able to scan for updates without an error.

As Perry stated, be sure that the Security Descriptor stuff is entered all
in one line. You should also check these steps to cope with the 0x80070005
error:
