Help Please!

I've tried a number of the suggested fixes but have had no luck.

Tried to register MSXML3.dll

Also tried the following. They all said that they had succeeded..

The errors I noticed were: 0x80246008/0x80040154
CocreateInstance Error
BITS interfaces are unregistered or the registry settings are messed up

Make sure BITS is enabled, see:-

and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883822
You receive a "The necessary services are disabled or unavailable" error message when you connect to
the Microsoft Windows Update Web site or to the Microsoft Update Web site

If you can't start the BITS service -
You may need to repair the BITS service with bitsadmin tool.

you may need to reinstall BITS:

Hi CarlosKiwi,

What operating system are you using?

The entries in your log lead me to believe that the problem that you're
experiencing is due to the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS),
error number 0x80246008. Ensure that this service is not disabled.......go to
Start>Run and key in:
services.msc
click on OK or hit ENTER
In the Services window, locate and double-click on Background Intelligent
Transfer Service. Under the General tab, look at the field beside "Startup
type". If it is set to Disabled, use the drop-down picklist to select either
Manual or Automatic (mine is set to Manual) and click on Apply. If the
"Service status" is Stopped click on the Start button to see if the BITS
service will start without further errors. If you don't receive any errors,
starting that service, try Windows Update and see if you are now successful
at finishing the d/loads and installations. If you receive any errors when
attempting to start the service, please include the exact wording of the
error message in a reply. Also, if you receive errors starting the service,
check the System log in Event Viewer for any errors from source Service
Control Manager. To open Event Viewer, click on Start>Run and key in:
eventvwr.msc
then click on OK or hit ENTER
Click on System in the left-hand pane to open the System log. If there are
errors that reference Background Intelligent Transfer Service in the
Description, please post the EventID number and the entire Description of the
error.

Oh no..... :-(

It didn't work. I started BITS (it was set to manual), there were no error
messages. Then ran Windows update same error message. Check the system log
and there were no BITS errors but quite a number of DCOM errors (event 10010).

Hi Patti...

I've ran a utility program called Belarc AdvisOr and it says I'm missing the
following updates

KB893066
Q893756
Q896727
Q899587
Q899591

And that I need to reinstall KB885836...

Hoping that I don't need to run the re-install CD over it!

I've also having issues when I open My Computer, flashlight comes up and it
takes several minutes before any of the drives come up...

While perusing the latest log entries that you posted, it struck me that it
seemed far different from your original post, so I went back and had a look
at your original post. I guess that'll teach me not to answer queries during
coffee break in the last few of hours of a double shift <g>, as I never
noticed that the dates of the entries were from January 17 of 2005, not
2006.

The "Failed to get agent interface pointers, hr=80040154" lines in your more
current entries combined with the error in your Subject line tend to point
towards a problem with XML modules. You stated in your original post "Tried
to register MSXML3.dll", but did you receive the message that registration
succeeded for that particular .dll file?

Have a look at this MSKB article:
You receive a 0x800A01AD error message while you access the Windows Update
Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833766
At the bottom of the page, you will see "To install MSXML 3.0 SP4, visit the
following Microsoft Web site. Follow the instructions on the Web site to
make sure that the service pack is installed correctly" followed by a
hyperlink. When you click on the link, you will be directed to the download
site for Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 7 (SP7), as SP7, not
SP4, is the most recent service pack for MSXML 3.0
The file to download is msxml3.msi
Once the file is downloaded, double-click on it to install MSXML 3.0 SP7

When you have finished installing the above, restart your computer and then
try d/loading and installing from the Windows Update site.

As for the DCOM errors, when you double-click on one of the most curent
error entries in Event Viewer, what does it say in the Description field?

The MSXML3 file register successfully.

I tried re-installing MSXML as I noticed you had recommended that to someone
else (the gentleman you recommended it too was rather rude as well if I
remember correctly!). It wouldn't install I got an error message trying to
install it. Can't remember what it was but I'll try again this evening. I'll
check the other error details as well..
