0x80190197 Issues running MS Update

927When running Microsoft Update and after clicking on Custom or Express I
receive the error:

"The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem."

[Error Number: 0x80190197]

The computer is a Toshiba Portege M300 running XP SP2, in a domain active
directory environment. It is behind an ISA Firewall Proxy but neither
microsoft nor windows updates are blocked. I am either to get them on other
computers using the same account.

I have tried:
net stop wuauserv
proxycfg -d
rmdir /q /s softwaredistribution
net start wuauserv

I have also removed the update controls from c:\windows\downloaded program
files. I have removed windows installer 3.

Hotfix KB927891 has been removed. I have confirmed this problem does seem to
be happening on more than 1 M300.

Any help would be appreciated!

Proxy authentication is required.

How the Windows Update client determines which proxy server to use to connect to the
Windows Update Web site

We have ran accross this problem as well. We investigated the problem with a
sniffer, and it looks like our Proxy server is requesting authentication, but
the Microsoft Update page never sends that request back to the client to
authenticate.

If we turn off Microsoft Updates and run "Windows Updates" it will
authenticate fine. This problem started after the client began updating with
a new WSUS 3 server.

I tried this including combinations of using the proxy script with the user
defined details and vice versa.

I tried with and without the proxy details using proxycfg and no luck either.

Checked all connection settings including firewall and no luck. Keep in mind
this works on other computers, but not this one.

Shankomatic,

I turned off Microsoft Update through the website as suggested. I then ran
Windows Update and it works!

So this is the scenario - I have 1x M500 Notebook and 2x M300 notebooks (I
have many more but this is what I'm using to test with).

On Both M300's I have this same problem. Disable MS Update and run Windows
Update and it works fine.

On the M500 MS Update works fine....

I'm very confused...

Courtesy of MVP Emeritus Ottmar Freudenberger:

1. First install the newly released 'standalone' version of Windows Update
Agent 3.0, v7.0.6000.374
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932494

Direct Download links:

x86-based versions of Windows (most users)
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x86.exe

x64-based versions of Windows
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...gent30-x64.exe

Itanium-based versions of Windows
http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7...ent30-ia64.exe

2. Now (re)install this (updated) fix:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891

3. Reboot.

4. Change the default back to Microsoft Update and see if the behavior
persists now.

The MS update team believes that this solves all three svchost problems that
folks have been experiencing. See
http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/archiv...follow-up.aspx
and http://blogs.technet.com/wsus/archiv...update-on.aspx

Also see
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blog...showentry=1071
(First try the steps posted May 4th at the beginning of the article.)

Workaround: Change the default from Microsoft Update to Windows Update: Go
to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left pane > Scroll to
bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable Microsoft Update
software and let me use Windows Update only (check). cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901037

With Windows Update as your default, you will need to check in at Office
Update to keep your Office applications fully patched:

PA Bear,

Thank you for your assistance.

I tried doing the suggested steps exactly as written and this made no
difference. I also tried deleting tempory internet files and setting the
proxy setting via proxycfg and no luck.

Same thing. It never became a problem until after the new Update Agent
installed that pointed to V7.

Check with your proxy server administrator then.
It looks as if it is allowing the WU server name
but not the MU server name.

In any case find out why *it* is sending HTTP 407 in one case
but not the other. Perhaps it has a log which would clarify this?
(Etc.) Note that this is a known issue for ISA proxy servers in that
it is necessary to allow anonymous connections with update
servers. (Ref. KB896226)

My understanding is that ISA clients may at least be able to get the list
of updates via WU (and perhaps via AU too?) and then do the downloads
manually from there (e.g. using the logged on user's authentication to get
through the proxy.)

I'm cross-posting to an ISA newsgroup. Perhaps someone reading
there will comment more knowledgeably.

Good luck

I has nothing to do with the proxy server rights. If I attempt to access the
MS Update site from a machine that dosen't have the new patches and still
points to the v6 update site it works fine, if the machine goes to the v7
site it will fail. If you look at my previous replys it will descrbe the
network sniffer capture I did while connecting.

The machine works fine when connected directly to the internet.
