0x80240029 = Vista problem, Not defender

Hi There.

This is the second time this has happened to me. I know how to fix it by
disabling and re-enabling automatic updates.

I know the people here will tell me this is a problem with Defender and that
I should take it to that forum. IT'S NOT A DEFENDER PROBLEM!

The reason I say this is that while defender is giving you this error
message, windows update doesn't work at all.

Once you fix the 'defender' problem, you can then download a bunch of older
updates that were available for your system such as media centre update,
CRITICAL security update etc.

When checking for updates before, it would act as if it looked and say that
there are no updates available when there were - it just wouldn't give them
to me because it thinks something on my PC is pirated.

Since it takes some time for the definitions to become outdated and then be
notified that you aren't getting any updates at all for Vista, you are left
without critical security updates!

This is a terrible VISTA problem and has happened to me twice.

I'm so disgusted with Vista.

This is an HP PC that came with Vista installed. No other software was added
besides a fully activated Office 2007 Home and Student.

When I go to the WGA site, it says they're both good yet I can't get any
updates for Vista.

What gives?

I love microsoft. I have an Xbox 360 premium, HD DVD add-on, and lots of MS
software. But seriously - can you fix this BS?

I shouldn't be dealing with this as a paying customer.

By the way, this brand new dual core 2GB of ram monster is WAY slower
clicking around the GUI and just loading up IE etc than my XP box which was a
single core classic athlon. How embarassing! Vista should not have been
released in this state. Media player also crashes all the time saying
something about its database and IE will randomly crash and reload itself to
my homepage killing all downloads in progress. NICE!

If I could somehow trade in my Vista Home Premium Licence for an XP MCE, I
WOULD!

You must be writing about the dreaded Defender Update error code 0x80240029.
I've got it also (who doesn't!) and I did "fix" it as you indicated. But
I'm not sure if disabling/enabling auto updates in the Security Center is a
permanent fix or not when future Defender updates come around.
I love my new Vista system and had bragged about its excellence. But this
Defender update error really bothers me. I hope Microsoft is looking at
this and will fix this soon!

Thanks for the info, Taur.... I used another solution by disabling the auto
Microsoft Updates in the Security Center (as discussed in several forums)
and this worked too. If this problem does reoccur I will use your
recommended method. Thanks again.

Thanks for the effort but as others have posted in this very forum regarding
this 'fix', it's not a fix at all. It's a bandaid. The problem will
invariably return. Many people have renamed that file several times and will
have to again. When is the REAL fix coming?
