i get an error code 0x80242006 when I try to install KB913446 (this is
security update for windows xp)
what can i do?

Download the update directly, then install it.
(It failed to install on my PC also, but this alternative method succeeds)

I have just experienced exactly the same problem. Other updates downloaded
and installed OK. Have tried just downloading it on its own, but no success
so far. Can't find any help in FAQ or Knowledge base.

Any help gratefully received

When trying to do a manual download and "run" the file, I get the error
message:
"update\update.exe is not a valid win32 application" ?

Thanks for the tip Carey, worked 100%. Ran Windows Update after installation
of the hotfix and rebooting my computer. Windows Upgrade acknowledged no
further updates were required (in my case), certainly no mention of KB913446.
Also, I am now aware that the update history only records updates installed
via Windows Update or the Automatic Update facilities. I believe it prudent
to run Windows Update following the self installation of Hotfixes to confirm
the installation is successful.
