I have examined all recent posts on this subject, but not found an answer
that solves the problem. I can check for updates, but when I try to download
the Windows Verification Tool, I receive a 'Download Failed' message wth the
above error code. I have made 3 attempts to do this - restartng the machine
each time.
I only have the Windows Firewall enabled. ANY ideas

are you sure that you aren't behind a proxy server?

The only proxy on here is the 127.0.0.1 one (if that makes sense) and as I
said,I have not made any changes to the system since my last successful
update.

ok... at the command prompt type:

reg query
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Internet
settings" (with the quotes)

and post the output,

also type "proxycfg" (without parameters), the command's output must be:

- -----------------------------------------------------------------
E:\Archivos de programa\Support Tools>proxycfg
Microsoft (R) WinHTTP Default Proxy Configuration Tool
Copyright (c) Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

Current WinHTTP proxy settings under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections\
WinHttpSettings :

Direct access (no proxy server).

Hi, John;

Do you have the following in your IE Trusted Sites list?

*.microsoft.com
*.windowsupdate.com

If not, add those two items (turn off the switch for requiring HTTPS at
the bottom of the window for adding trusted sites). Be sure all
instances of IE are closed and then open one instance of IE and give the
site another try. BTW, how are you getting to the WU website? I mean
from the IE pulldown menu or from a shortcut in your Favorites? Have
you installed SP2 on that system yet? Have you done a Restart recently
(if not, please do so right away)?
