It means that Proxy access failed or proxy access was denied. This equates to HTTP error status 407.
Basically, proxy authentication is required.

Plain-speak: Are you using a proxy server to access the internet? Are you running some sort of anonymiser program?

Be sure you got/saw this error in your WindowsUpdate.log file.

Try turning off any antivirus program & any user application programs before going to Windows Update, and be sure you are using Internet Explorer browser.

Do you intend , or must you use a proxy server?

I am experiencing the same problem as everyone else, and none of the
resolutions have helped me.

See if you have following settings:
In Internet Explorer browser, select Tools >Internet Options > Advanced Tab > (scroll down thru the list)

These are "some" of the items that I have CHECKed (selected):
Under HTTP 1.1 settings --
Use HTTP 1.1 (ON / Selected)
+ Enable / check "Use HTTP 1.1 with proxy servers" **** <<----

Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections Tab Click
on LAN Settings > * Uncheck* the Automatically detect settings.
Make sure _no other_ settings on this screen are enabled.

I got this same error on my Windows 2000 Server (SBS, actually).
I'm running ISA Server.
More and more software seems to not work with ISA Server (which is a
firewall/proxy/caching server), including MSN Investor (the ActiveX portfolio
control), the new www.Trumba.com Outlook sync application, and now Windows
Update.

It would appear that Microsoft is no longer supporting ISA Server?

server - http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS05-034.mspx
and windows update seems to be working fine now...

Rhonda,

Thank you for your response, and shedding more light on that situation.

To our other readers & posters: Please DO specify your Windows version / edition, most especially if you have a server.
(Benjamin specified his. so, this is addressed to others. )
