0x8024402C error stops Microsoft Update scan

Subject line says it all. Terribly slow scan ended with this code, retry
fails immediately with same code. Attempts to raise the Microsoft
troubleshootng site are fruitless.

Other sites seem to be okay, this appears to be a problem between Windows
Server Standard x64 and Microsoft Update.

This problem occus sporadically on the other 45 servers too.

When searching for available updates on the Update site, you receive the 0x8024402C
error
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsu...=en&IsMu=False

You may receive an error message when you search for available updates on the Windows
Update Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=883821

was the one that resolved the issue for me. I did not even have to reboot
the OS. What kills me is that I have never used a proxy on that machine!

I have been reading these threads for hours and have eventually found this
suggestion works for me. I am behind a corporate firewall. IE is configured
in a such a way that I can't amend the Connection - LAN Settings as they are
greyed out. I know that we need to use a proxy to get out as I have had to
set Mozilla Firefox myself. The steps I took are:
Run cmd to get a DOS window,
proxycfg -d
proxycfg -p proxynameort
exit
Try Windows Update
Select Express - yippee!
