Hi I have just installed Virtual Server 2005 and having created two
new virtual machines xp sp2 and xp sp3.

However when I try to connect to windows update and perform a
"checking for new updates" I get the following error message:

The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you
are trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve

First off, try installing the latest edition of the Windows Update Agent
[ WUA ... most likely, the x86 version] to the problematic OS' and see
if that gets the XML file in proper order. Use the download link under
" Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003,
and Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 " on this page:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104

Save the WUA and then move it to the root drive of one of the virtual
OS', usually C:\.
Close all open programs and browsers.
Open a Command Prompt and type in the following, pressing Enter after
each command

net stop wuauserv
c:\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe
net start wuauserv
exit

NOTE: the command assumes that the WUA is saved to C:\
If the root drive has a different letter, use that letter.

Restart the virtual OS and see if it can update now.
If yes, then install the WUA to the other virtual OS.

Hi I have done as suggested below (apart from I used the /wuforce flag
to force an install

> net stop wuauserv
> c:\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe
> net start wuauserv
> exit


However this is still not working, This is on a FRESH copy of a XP. I
have also tried this on VMWARE server and have the same problem, any
more ideas?

Aha looks like I found it, Deep down buried in my Draytek router
settings I found that I have enabled "Active X" as a restricted Web
feature, once I unchecked this then update works on my virtual
machines.

This seems to be a rare error that only occurs when I am using
wireless on a HOST that has VIRTUAL machines set up and will only
affect the virtual machines and not the host/

Note: This error does not happen on the HOST machine.

Nice find, Rippo. Strange that the host can update but the guest can not
when using wireless connections.
