0x8024d007 Automatic Update Service won't start

I'm having more or less the same problems as everyone else posting about the
failed update services. I've read many of the threads above, and tried lots
of manually registering dlls and so on, but without any success.

WinXP Pro SP2.
Things worked fine up until about the end of July 2007, as others have said.
Now I get to the "Registering 100%..." web page, time out (because my auto
update service is not running), and get the usual web page about "Windows
encountered a problem, can't read the web page... 0x8007041D (which is a
timeout error apparently, because the web page can't contact my auto update
service). I haven't installed any software or done anything fancy since July.
In fact, I don't even use this computer---I just turn it on once in a while
to collect the latest windows updates.

I've set the Internet Options to NOT check for certificate revocation (as
described in threads above), and have tried to copy over the wuapi.dll from
the dllcache to the system32 folder. But, like a previous poster, my copy
always fails, and the dllcache version never truly gets copied into the
system32 folder.

I was completely scared to try the complex stuff to mess with whatever is
automatically replacing system32\wuapi.dll with a copy of itself, so I
stalled out there. (And a good job I did, too, because the other poster got
in a lot of trouble and ended up restoring images or whatever).

So now I'm posting here in the hopes that someone can help me.

Does anyone truly understand what is causing all these MUpdate headaches?
(As I said, I don't even use this machine, so I don't think it was anything
that I did.)

What might I try now (besides a complete reinstall of XP)?

As always, any good help would be appreciated--where would we all be without
experts on the web infrastructure to help with these kinds of problems?

In case I have the good fortune to have MowGreen read my posting, here are
some lines from my windows update log file, collected immediately after a
fresh reboot and an interaction cycle with the MUpdate web site. As you can
see from the log, there are lots of places where software cannot contact my
auto update service.

The auto update service is correctly configured to automatically start, and
to log on using the local system account, and NOT allowed to interact with
the desktop. The wuapi.dll in the dllcache is apparently the correct version
(it has the smaller "size on disk" value), while the one in system32 is
apparently an older (larger "size on disk" value).

Good hunting. I hope you see something in here that makes a solution obvious
to you.

You may find http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916259/en-us helpfull.

In case, that doesn't help:
Please check the file dates and version of the "regsvr32.exe" in the System32
subfolder of the "Windows" folder. The one beeing placed on your system may
not the one which should be there running Windows XP SP2 and/or is corrupt.

Thanks for the suggestion Ottmar. It did not work, and in frustration I just
reinstalled my whole machine with a fresh copy of windows. Nothing like a
complete reinstall to get Windows Update working!
