I'm on Windows XP, the machine has SP 2. I've been trying to get recent
updates in the past year for this machine, but I keep getting the error
listed in the topic.

Googling the question gives few results. In the results, one MVP suggests to
register 5 DLLs. I did register them successfully but that did not solve my
problem.

Can anyone help me? I badly need to run updates on this machine for some
other software to function.

Hello Kurtas,

Since you are with XP, Doesn't hurt to try the recommendation here:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...1-35f68f2ad7fc

I hope this post is helpful.

Let us know how it works ºut.

I will try that -

I should note how I get this error: I open IE, Tools -> Updates. IE takes
2-3 minutes of checking if I'm using the latest update software, then I get
the error. So I don't get as far as selecting Express or Custom updates.

Also here is something interesting. When I get the error it gives me the
option to search for solutions - and I am directed here:

http://www.update.microsoft.com/wind...=en&IsMu=False

The final question asked to check out the Add-On called WUWebControl Class.
This is not listed in the list of Addons that have been used by IE.

Further googling leads me to belive that this computer is or was configured
to use WSUS.. I then found C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (note the space in
the file name).

This log has entries like this:

2007-07-30 13:24:16 17:24:16 Success IUENGINE Starting

edgeeng was an old domain controller. The server is still active, but not as
a DC. Could this all be related!?

Kurtas,

The system is seeking updates from the intranet server plus the latest
Windows Update Agent is not installed yet.

NOTE: *** IF WSUS is being used to update the Client systems then you
should *NOT* change/delete the intranet server. Consult the Admin if
this is the case ***

Try this ... go to Start > Run > type in

gpedit.msc
Click OK or press Enter

Click the plus signs next to -
Computer Configuration
Administrative Templates
Windows Components
Click on Windows Update

In the right frame locate ' Specify intranet Microsoft update service
location '
Right click it and choose Properties
It should be marked as Enabled and show http://edgeeng
Delete http://edgeeng wherever it shows and then put a mark next to
" Not Configured "
Click Apply, OK, and close the Group Policy window

Stop the Automatic Updates service by going to
Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter

Enable show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tuto...l62.html#winxp

Go to Start > Run > type in

%windir%\softwaredistribution
Click OK or press Enter
Delete ALL of the *subfolders* of SoftwareDistribution
Close the window
* NOTE: This will delete the update history shown on the
Windows/Microsoft Update sites *

Download and save BOTH of these updates:
Windows Update Agent for x86 [32 bit]
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237

KB927891
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...9-404327772E5A

When the downloads complete, close the browser and any other open programs
Install the Windows Update Agent first
Install KB927891 and then restart the system

IF the Automatic Updates service is set to Automatic, then it should
have Started again on reboot. Check in the Services console to confirm
that it has.
If yes, then either go to Windows Update [ the subfolders of
SoftwareDistribution will be recreated now ] or, Start > Run > type in

wuauclt /detectnow
Click OK or press Enter
That should bring down any needed updates

MowGreen-

In gpedit, the 'Specify intranet MS update servers location' was set to "Not
Configured"

How can that be? Are there some registry keys I can check?

Ignore my last post - I went one to the next steps anyways.

After applying those KBs - I got past the error, and the computer is now
catching up on missed updates.

THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!

You're mowst welcome. The Windows Update.log, the one with
http://edgeeng as the update server, is actually not the WindowsUpdate.log.
The former is for logging the updating done via the Windows/Microsoft
Update Catalog, the latter has to do with updating done via Automatic
Updates or updates done at the Windows/Microsoft Update sites.

Anyway ... the most important thing is ... it's working. <w>
