I have the above message appearing on trying to access Windows Update. I
have seen the fixes mentioned but they only apply to having SP2 installed.
Windows XP SP2 site says I have it installed but my computer disagrees as the
options needed to apply the fix required are not available in my Microsoft
Internet Explorer. Can anyone help please?

Hi mogul2968,

D/load and install the Update for Background Intelligent Transfer Service
(BITS) 2.0 and WinHTTP 5.1 (KB842773):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
Restart your computer after installing and retry Windows Update.

If you still receive the error message, try the Resolution steps for Windows
XP in this MSKB article:

"Software update incomplete" error message when you visit the Windows Update
Web site

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=319585

If the above still fails to resolve the problem, download and reinstall the
V5 of Windows Update Active X

Controls, available from:

http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...en/wusetup.cab

Save the file to a folder that you create on the Desktop. When the file has
been d/loaded, extract the files to this folder that you created. The files
are :

WUSETUP.CAT

WUSETUP.INF

Right click on the WUSETUP.INF file and select "Install".

Restart your computer and then retry Windows Update.

Regards,

Hi nickelz,

In addition to the response I posted for mogul2968, if you SP2 installed, in
IE go to Tools>Manage add-ons and ensure that WuWebControlClass is
activated.
