I too am getting this on one PC. I have been setting up new PC's quite a bit
lately and none of them have given any problems with Windows updates except
this one. It is an HP XW8200 with dual Xeon processors and 1 GB or ram,
Windows XP SP2, fresh out of the box. The first thing I do, after installing
the Novell netware client and firewall client is to install Windows updates.
As I've said, I do this often with no problems.

One thing I noticed on this one, and I think it is part of the problem, is
that when it popped up the yellow bar to install the active-x deal, I clicked
ok to install but, for some reason unbeknownst to me, it didn't install it.
I have not seen that yellow bar again after several restarts and retries of
Windows updates. I have read every message in this forum pertaining to this
0xDDD0004 error and have tried everything, and I mean everything suggested
with absolutely no change. I will say that the "C:\Program
Files\WindowsUpdate" folder was and still is empty, and when searching for
iuctl.dll and iuengine.dll the first time, it only found iuengine.dll, and I
deleted it. Now, the search finds neither, even after several new attempts
to run Windows updates.

I was able to install another active-x add-in recently, but I tend to
believe that the missing yellow bar has something to do with this problem.
Any help with this would be appreciated. I have thought about blowing this
thing away and restoring with the CD, but I would really like to discover
what the problem is for the future, in case it haunts me again.

Here is the WindowsUpdate.log file entries for, I believe the time just
before the last restart until now. Maybe this will shed some light...

I continued to look for an answer to this and stumbled upon this article.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

Method 3 is what fixed my problem. It seems the catroot2 folder contents
were corrupted. As soon as I renamed it and restarted the cryptsvc service,
I tried Windows update again and glory be, it took off and uodated just fine.

I feel like Microsoft ought to send me some free software or something for
figuring out what was wrong with their software. :-) It seems bizarre that
you can search their website or the TechNet website with this error code and
get "No results found". I guess it's not important enough in the realm of
things for them to post anything about it. It just wasted several hours of
my day. But who am I? Just a lowly system analyst that works with their
software 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks a year. That's all. :-) I
hope this helps someone else.
