Suspecting a virus I have reinstalled W2k on a reformatted disc but still hit
the problem of SVCHOST for Windows Update starting well, downloading latest
update software, producing the Critical/Custom option buttons, being busy on
disc but then going to 99% cpu and eventually IE giving up with 0x8ddd0009
error code.
I have tried many many solutions including Dial-a-fix and clearing software
disrtibution directory but all to no avail.
I wonder whether the fact that using 'Connect to the Internet' is the cause
as I now connect via a USB modem to broadband and do not have and internal
modem to configure.

No ... I have had this problem off and on. Most of the time, it turned out
to be Server overload on MS side.
One week-end I tried all week-end long. Finally gave up around 3AM, Tried
one more time, and it worked.
This only seems to happen with Custom. Nothing changed on my system. Don't
know if it is a timing problem or what.

MS has never been great with error codes. To give the same error message
for many error codes (Web-site error ....), stinks. If it a timing problem,
they should say so.

Whenever, I have gotten Custom to work, it has always been early in the AM
for my timezone.

But you should be able to get Critical to work. I get automatic Critical
Updates all the time.

However, I have not tried manual Critical/Custom for a while. I'll try
again and let you know.
By the way, I'm on 56K dial-up.

Hi Allen - This has been showing up a lot recently and most of the guidance
offered doesn't seem to help much, but the following has worked, especially
for some Win2k systems.

Try the following:

1. Close ALL instances of IE/OE/and Windows Explorer.
2. In Control Panel, open Internet Options.
3. Clear the TIF to include Off-line Content
4. Clear History
5. On the Advanced Tab, UNcheck "Clear third party browser extenstions"
6. Reboot, then reboot again (Yes, twice! ), and then retry Update
(Windows or Microsoft, whichever you're using.)

If It now works, then one of your BHO's is likely the problem. One known
culprit for this error is McAfee's version of Site Advisor. If you have it
installed, uninstall the McAfee Site Advisor (you may have two installed,
one under McAfee and one under Site Advisor, BTW) and then RE-check "Clear
third party browser extenstions", and then see if Update still works. If
not, then you'll just have to try disabling your BHO's one at a time to find
the problem guy. Try BHO Cop (from PC Mag if you happen to have this) or
BHODemon2, http://www.definitivesolutions.com/.

Please post back with your results.
