The error states:

Windows Update cannot continue because a required service application is
disabled. Windows Update requires the following services:
Automatic Updates enables detection, downloading, and installation of
critical updates for your computer.
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) enables faster, restartable
downloading of updates.
Event Log logs Windows Update events for troubleshooting.

All three of these services are showing as "Started". I have been using
Update without problems before, and this is new today. Any ideas?

Thanks Charles, however it didn't work. Same as the solution for this error
as recommended by MS didn't work.

Oli, what DID work for me was THIS:

Open services.msc Go to " Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator". If you
have disabled it as I had (because it is said to be a potential security risk
as mentioned in numerous places on the web), right click on it, go to
'Properties', change to 'manual' and Apply that.

Now Update works again. Microsoft should amend its help screens as it isn't
just those services it mentions!!

Thanks for posting your solution, dougjp.

It's true that RPC is a dependency of BITS.
And normally BITS is started manually so that having its dependency
missing might be harder to notice.

Were there at least some messages in the WindowsUpdate.log
to clue you in about the reason for the failure?
