I was current with Windows Update and searched for new updates on 4/15/09.
Windows Update failed: 0x8DDD0018

Scanned computer: no virus or malware. BITS was running.

I came across this fix in this Microsoft Forum: 'run regsvr32.exe wuaueng.dll'

This fixed the problem:
RegSvr32 replied ' DllResisterServer in wuaueng.dll succeeded '

I understand this links a module in Microsoft Wnidows Update. However, I
would like to know the cause of this breakage, especially considering I have
all of the XP maintenance.

A hijackware infection is the usual culprit. No combination of AV or
anti-spware scanning will detect and remove all hijackware.

What is 'hijackware infection' and what caused it? Especially considering I
had the current Microsoft Updates.....

Hijackware and malware are the pretty much same thing; see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malware

While keeping your computer fully patched at Windows Update is a very
important, it alone does not and cannot prevent hijackware/malware.
