All that and still no mention of your Windows version, edition, service pack
level, etc.
Perhaps you do not know how to get to/provide such information. Let me help
out.
Start button --> RUN
(no "RUN"? Press the "Windows Key" + R on your keyboard)
--> type in:
winver
--> Click OK.
The picture at the top of the window that opens will give you the general
(Operating System name) while the line starting with the word "version" will
give you the rest of the story. Post _both_ in response to this message
verbatim. No paraphrasing - instead - ensure character-for-character
copying.
;-)
Now that you have provided some basic information (consider where you are
posting - just "public.windowsupdate" <-- knowing your operating system and
service pack and specific edition/version can be vital in providing you with
directed and accurate assistance) you might want to also figure out if you
have a 32-bit or 64-bit OS.
If it is Windows XP - the chances are much higher you have a 32-bit OS. If
it does not say "Windows XP Professional" in the picture I have acked you to
look at in the instructions above - the chances are zero you have 64-bit.
If it does say "Windows XP Professional" but the "Version" tell you that you
have SP3 (Service Pack 3) - the chances are zero you have 64-bit. Most
people will just *know* if they have 64-bit Windows XP.
As for Windows Vista or Windows 7... Locate the "Computer" icon and
right-click on it. Choose "properties" and under the "General" tab - it
should let you know the architecture of your operating system (32-bit or
64-bit.) - share that information here as well.
Unfortunately you utilized the web interface (as bad as it is) to access
these newsgroups. I cannot gleem anything from your headers that would help
me identify what Operating System you are utilizing.
First - some help that will assume nothing. You can/should do this part
whether you have Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 (32 or 64-bit.)
<Windows XP, Vista & 7 32/64-bit>
Download, install, run, update and perform a full scan (separately) with the
following two applications (freeware versions are the ones to use for this):
SuperAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/
MalwareBytes
http://www.malwarebytes.com/
After performing a full scan with one and then the other and removing
whatever they both find completely, you may uninstall these products,
if you wish.
Download and run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/ma...e/default.mspx
Reboot.
</Windows XP, Vista & 7 32/64-bit>
If you have Windows XP (32-bit), do the following:
<Windows XP 32-bit>
Fix your file/registry permissions...
Ignore the title and follow the sub-section under "Advanced Troubleshooting"
titled, "Method 1: Reset the registry and the file permissions"
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949377
*will take time
(** Ignore the last step - you'll should already have SP3, but if not, no
worries
right now.)
Reboot and ...
Download/install this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
After installing, do the following:
Start button --> RUN --> type in:
"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Installer Clean Up\msizap.exe" g!
--> Click OK.
(The quotation marks and percentage signs and spacing should be exact.)
Reboot.
Download/Install the latest Windows Installer (for your OS):
( Windows XP 32-bit : WindowsXP-KB942288-v3-x86.exe )
http://www.microsoft.com/downloadS/d...displaylang=en
Reboot.
and...
Download the latest version of the Windows Update agent from here (x86):
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=91237
.... and save it to the root of your C:\ drive. After saving it to the root
of the C:\ drive, do the following:
Close all Internet Explorer windows and other applications.
Start button --> RUN and type in:
%SystemDrive%\windowsupdateagent30-x86.exe /WUFORCE
--> Click OK.
(If asked, select "Run.) --> Click on NEXT --> Select "I agree" and click on
NEXT --> When it finishes installing, click on "Finish"...
Reboot.
Then follow the instructions here:

Reboot.

Reboot.
Disable/Uninstall any 3rd party firewall you have for now. I personally
think you will have less trouble if you uninstall any third-party firewall
you have permanently - but that is your choice.
Disable any AntiVirus software you run for now (while doing the following.)
Log on as an user with administrative rights and open Internet Explorer
and visit
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and select to do a
CUSTOM scan...
Every time you are about to click on something while at these web pages -
first press and hold down the CTRL key while you click on it. You can
release the CTRL key after clicking each time.
Once the scan is done, select just _ONE_ of the high priority updates
(deselect any others) and install it.
Reboot again.
If it did work - try the web page again - selecting no more than 3-5 at a
time. Rebooting as needed.
</Windows XP 32-bit>
If you have 32-bit Windows Vista, do the following:
<Windows Vista 32-bit>
How do I reset Windows Update components?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058
Reboot.
</Windows Vista 32-bit>
After you do the above steps for your OS - then try to get updates again.
If nothing above qualifies - I may not have included it just yet in hopes
that you would return with the necessary information to further assist you
instead of making one long all-inclusive posting. ;-)
Something else to note - as to your last comment/query about purchasing
update CD/DVDs... Why are you purchasing something Microsoft has made
available for anyone to download/burn for free (well - cost of your time and
your CD/DVD) for years?
