For the last 2 weeks I keep running into this error (Automatic Update not
successful). Before posting, I did a search - but it did not turn up any
messges regarding this error. Any ideas on what's happening?

Please see this page http://dts-l.net/goodpost.htm then post back to this
thread with the information we'd need to be able to assist you properly.

I don't understand. Why are you giving me link to completely useless
discussion?

My question is clear - I repeat: I did windows update and it ended with
'Some updates could not be installed', after going to Microsoft Update web
site and clicking 'Review your update history' I see several red crosses in
Status column and after clicking on them I read 'Error Code: 0xB74 Try to
install the update again, or request help from one of the following
resources...'

So - what does that mean when I get error 0xB74 after doing windows update?
What does this error code exactly mean? (Note that I tried to install these
updates maybe 7-8 times. Everytime it's the same.)

Thank you.

Sev.

All that is currently known about the subject code is that it is not defined in XPsp2's
list of messages. Something at the time (e.g. another post in another thread)
probably gave me the idea that that poster was using Vista. So, since we don't know
what OS you are using that re-request for clarification could still produce information
about that code, perhaps even from you.

In fact, I just checked the profile of the OP from PA Bear's link and found
that there probably wasn't any clue about the OS then either. So I was probably
just asking a question for any other reader (e.g. a Vista user) to try to add to
the discussion.

In any case, from there any reader could try a web search.

Here you go:

<title>You receive an &quot;Internal Error 2932: Please contact product support
for assistance&quot; error message when you apply the Office 2000 SR-1 Update
on Windows 2000</title>
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/254869

(Live Search for
2932 site:microsoft.com
)

Note that that hit fits with *all* of the details provided by both the original OP
and yourself.

<quote>
For the last 2 weeks I"ve been trying to get Microsoft Update to
sucessfully finish its install of 2 secuirty fixes (one for Excel & one for
Outlook) but keep running into this error.
</quote>

See? No OS, so Windows 2000 would fit. No version for the products
which *were* mentioned (in contrast to your case), so Office 2000
would be good enough too.

Less clear than the vague example you were given, which was probably
given both to be helpful and to try to incite you to provide some details. ; }

As Robert points out in his reply, the archived newsgroup link was the
*only* thing I could find anywhere about a 0xB74 error.

Also, it would be *enormously* helpful if you'd state your Windows version.
Barring that, all I can offer follows:
=====================
Tip: Temporarily disable real-time protection by your anti-virus and/or
anti-spyware applications (e.g., CounterSpy, Spysweeper, Spybot Tea Timer,
AVG Anti-Spyware) and/or any third-party firewall (e.g., ZA) before
attempting to install the update(s). If you disable the third-party
firewall, make certain that you enable the Windows Firewall!

Ok. Thank you for all information. I do Automatic Update on Win XP SP2 (build
2600). Update ends with "Some updates cannot be installed
Update for Office 2003 (KB907417)
Office 2003 Security Update for Microsoft Office Publisher 2003 (KB946254)
Office 2003 Security Update for Microsoft Works Suite 2005 (KB943973)
Office 2003 Update for Outlook Junk Email Filter 2003 (KB944941)
Office 2003 Security Update for Office 2003 (KB945185)
Office 2003 Security Update for Microsoft Office Word 2003 (KB943983)
.."

According to your post, I examined C:\windows\windowsupdate.log. It's very
long. Maybe the interesting part is this one:

It would be great if you can examine this log and figure out what's happening.

Thank you,

Crossposted to Office Update newsgroup.

See this KB article (even though the portion of the log you posted doesn't
include error 80070643):

You receive an "Error 80070643" error message when you try to update Office
2003 by using Software Update Services:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903772

[To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.]

Aha. So that code is related somehow to Office products. ; )
In that case you may get better assistance from a newsgroup
which specializes in them, in particular the Office Update NG.
Cross-posting so you can switch to it if you want.

I suspect that this may be your best clue. For one thing it shows that the
install is MSI based, so that implies you could probably find supplementary
diagnostics associated with the install attempt *and* if you tried to do the
install of the update manually you could probably request verbose logging
(if it is not already available.)

To find such diagnostics simply search your harddrive(s) for all files which
were changed on that day. Then sort the results by Date Modified.
(E.g. use View, Details; make sure that you have Date Modified as one of the columns; and then either click on the Date Modified
column header
or use View, Arrange Icons By... to do that.) Then scroll to the files which
were changed about 14:19:23 (for example).

Secondly 0x8024000B is the only really specific error code you have so far.
The rest are really only things saying stuff like "there was an error" or "we really
didn't expect anybody to ever see this error..." <eg>

So let's do a search on that code. Unfortunately there is no consistency
about whether useful information will be found with it as being prefixed by 0x
or not, so I use a Boolean OR to find either in the all documents.

I first tried restricting my search to site:support.microsoft.com
but there were no hits there.

Unfortunately it seems that this one is a general code too:

(Live Search for
(0x8024000B OR 8024000B) site:microsoft.com
)
<quote>
0x8024000B
WU_E_CALL_CANCELLED
Operation was cancelled.

</quote>

I suspect in order to know _why_ the call was cancelled you are going
to have to get the corresponding verbose logging for the install attempt
(as described above.)

Otherwise it appears that any other hits from my last search involve
newsgroup queries or discussions. So let's try to find any which might
have had some suggestions in them...

http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q...arch&form=QBRE

(Live Search for
(0x8024000B OR 8024000B) (MSFT OR MVP) site:microsoft.com
)

That whittled them down to 10 hits. Of the ones which are similar to yours
the suggestion has been to open a support case. There hasn't been much
feedback on that tack unfortunately.

If you get some better clues from the verbose logging idea please post back.
It looks as if this is your chance to be a trailblazer... <eg>

Good luck
