0xc80004c0 error in WindowsUpdate.log

Hi,

windows update is failing on my machine. In the event browser I'm getting
the following errors

wuauclt (6004) Database recovery/restore failed with unexpected error -1216.

wuauclt (6004) Database recovery failed with error -1216 because it
encountered references to a database,
'C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\DataSto re.edb', which is no
longer present. The database was not brought to a consistent state before it
was removed (or possibly moved or renamed). The database engine will not
permit recovery to complete for this instance until the missing database is
re-instated. If the database is truly no longer available and no longer
required, please contact PSS for further instructions regarding the steps
required in order to allow recovery to proceed without this database.

I've checked that the file exists and has an timestamp of around when I
installed SP2. In the WindowsUpdate.log I get the following.

Troubleshouter Web site:

When searching for available updates on the Windows Update site, you
receive the 0x80248011 error.

Those are the significant messages I think. E.g. 0x04c0 == 1216

The failed to spawn COM server makes me think that you should
try some of the regsvr32 commands which are available.

Incredibly the troubleshooter has nothing which matches
a search for wuau + regsvr32. So use Google Groups
or the web interface to news for those. Unfortunately,
since neither search allows stemming you have to search
for a few particular module names:

wuaueng regsvr32 MVP OR MSFT group:microsoft.*
- sorted by date to reveal current thinking about this procedure
)


Note that a key idea before re-registering the modules is to stop
the Automatic Updates service (aka wuauserv). You can find
hits which refer to that module in their instructions or which employ
other procedures to stop the service.
