After downloading and installing current updates, the PC rebooted. On reboot,
the
following error message appeared: "Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from
%2. Windows could not upgrade one or more system files before starting.
Windows
may not start or run properly. If Windows fails to start, run SETUP again.
Press
any key to continue. "

The installation history shows the download as successful. I clicked to
search for
more updates and the same updates appeared as critical. Obviously, the
download
is not installing properly.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

Arnmh1

Is Windows ME the OS or, is it another OS afflicted with a Symantec
product, e.g. Norton Internet Security/Norton Antivirus/Norton System
Destroyer ?

For Win ME :
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283069

XP : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281967

Basically the same resolution ... delete the 0 byte OEM *.inf files.

Hi MowGreen:

Yes, the OS is ME. I'm sorry I didn't mention it in my original post. Also,
I do use Norton Internet Security 2005, but it has never interfered with
Windows Update downloads before.

I'll check out your suggestions. Thanks.

But it has now. It's not an uncommon issue with NIS|NAV|NPF or any
Norton "product" and ME.
