I have tried repeatedly to install updates - through the aut updater, at MS
site using the Microsoft Updater, and when shutting down and letting them
update automatically. In all cases I get a message saying the following
updates could not be installed. No reasons given and at MS site no solutions
given either, just a message saying a problem on your computer is preventing
these updates from installing. This applies to the following updates:

Cumulative Security Update for ActiveX Killbits for Windows XP (KB950760)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB950762)
Security Update for Windows XP with Windows Media Format Runtime 9.5 and 11
(KB941569)
Update for Windows XP (KB942763)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951698)
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - June 2008 (KB890830)
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP (KB950759)
Security Update for Windows XP (KB951376)

I am using Windows XP with sp2. I am not PC-literate so simple layman's
solutions would be super!

Hello fotojunkie,

Go ahead and download Dial-ª-Fix.

<http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix> (Download near bottom)

Click the green checkmark and click Go.

After it has finished, Reboot

Try Windows Update and see if you can get your updates installed.

Asked/Answered in WinXP General. If you must make identical posts to
multiple newsgroups, please cross-post one (1) message to all of them.
Thank you.

I have a similar problem as fotojunkie, 4 of the updates he mentions will not
install on 3 of my machines. Exact same symptoms; they download and do not
install. I've read Microsoft Knowledge Base article 910336 and followed
those instructions which instruct you to delete the contents of the Datastore
folder to no avail and I tried Engel's advice of Dial-A-Fix and that did not
resolve the problem either.

I surmise something with a particular patch I downloaded last time as 3
machines all suffer the same fate. I'll look for other ideas and keep those
reading this updated. Thanks Engel for the link to Dial-a-fix it is an
interesting product.

PA Bear - thank you for the response. I read the original post (now that I
see it in Windows General) and read the KB article you referenced (943144)
however it doesn't apply to my problem.

I am running XP with SP3 but these are brand new machines. They came with
XP SP2 and back on 6/15/08 when I took them out of the box I updated them to
SP3 via Windows update, so they are not repaired using the Windows XP CD as
mentioned in KB 943144. Today I tried updating them as 4 updates appear
under recommended and they download but do not install.

- Thanks again

As many will tell you - ignore the title and symptoms listed in the article
referred to. Do method 1 and 2 and see if it fixes your issue whether or
not you repaired anything.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
Try method 1 and try to update*.
If fails - try method 2 and try to update*.

*try to update:
- Visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
- If it asks you to install anything before you see a selection of "Custom"
or "Express" - do so.
- Once you see the "Custom" or "Express" selection, choose "Custom".
- Scan for updates.
- When it lists what it finds - install the critical ones.
- You are generally safe doing the Optional Software Updates. I suggest
avoiding the Optional Hardware Updates completely.

Thanks - I applied the fix regardless of the fact that I didn't match both
criteria and silly me - it worked!

Thanks again!!
