I updated (WU) today and since about 15 patches installed when I try to open
"My documents" from the start menu, via a shortcut on the tool bar or from a
shortcut on the desktop I repeatedly get the message that Windows Explorer
has encountered a problem and needs to close.

The following is in the report it sends to Microsoft:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: shell32.dll
ModVer: 6.0.2900.3051 Offset: 001e4127

This info it sends in a report called:
C:\DOCUME~1\David\LOCALS~1\Temp\5d5c_appcompat.txt

I have tried to copy and paste the information contained within that message
but the window showing it will not allow the data collection and when I try
to use windows explorer to reach and open the text document - windows
explorer again continues to fail.

Basically - today's updates have screwed up my windows explorer and I don't
know what the solution to this is.

Please does anyone have the same experience or a solution?

Thanks
Dave

Customers in the U.S. and Canada can receive technical support from
Microsoft Product Support Services at 1-866-PCSAFETY. There is no charge for
support calls that are associated with security updates.

International customers can receive support from their local Microsoft
subsidiaries. There is no charge for support that is associated with
security updates. For more information about how to contact Microsoft for
support issues, visit the International Support Web site:

Hi PA Bear,
Thanks for the info. As the UK support centre is only open Mon to Fri 0800
to 1800hrs I will have to wait until tomorrow now. As it is I can not do any
work, open any folders or explore my computer, my documents, my images or my
anything - kind of frustrating really. Really appreciate your pointing out I
can get free help as it was a MS Windows Update carrying a security patch
(several) today that caused the problem.
Thanks
Dave

Hi PA Bear,

As you had the kindness to advise me earlier on the posted problem I thought
I'd let you know the list of updates that I applied that cuased the death of
my Windows Explorer. Before the list, I have in fact been able to rersolve
the problem on a short term basis by restoring my computer to 14.57hrs today
(the last restore point before adding the dreaded updates). Now, I have the
problem - which of the below updates caused the failure?????
I know I need to have updates but which of these is going to stuff my
computer again? Knowing one of them is going to pickle it, do I leave them
all and not risk it again?
Here's the list:
Microsoft Windows XP
Security Update for Windows XP (KB928255)

A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
compromise your Windows-based system and gain control over it. You can help
protect your computer by installing this update from Microsoft. After you
install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

A new version of the tool will be offered every month. If you want to
manually run the tool on your computer, you can download a copy from the
Microsoft Download Center or run an online version from microsoft.com. This
tool is not a replacement for an anti-virus product. To help protect your
computer, you should use an anti-virus product.

Microsoft Office 2003 Updates:

not saved.

Additionally, other fixes may be included in the update.

Download size: 5.5 MB , 1 minute
A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Office 2003 that could allow
arbitrary code to run when a maliciously modified file is opened. This update
resolves that vulnerability.

I suppose an alternative would be to install each individually, creating a
restore point before each, testing Windows Explorer after the restart and
identifying which causes the failure. It's going to take a couple of days I
really can not afford but system integrity is just as important. What do you
think?

Kind regards
Dave

Hi Dave,

I one way I'm glad I'm not alone on this. One of my PC's has EXACTLY the
same problem... I would presume, like me you are running virus checkers etc,
and nothing should be different about our PC's than anyone elses. If that is
the case, what the hell have they done here... there must be quite a few
people who can't use IE 7 now. To be honest, I think they are just doing the
usual, break XP now vista (not worthy of a capital) is out, and not many are
buying... so they break the old OS a little bit at a time... get people
thinking about a 'better' os. Let's all go and use Lynux and Open Office.
Can't be any worse than this can it. No internet explorer, in this
day-and-age. Unacceptable. Oh, and I didn't have the restore points running
so I'm out of luck for a quick fix I guess. Anyway, as I said, glad not to be
alone, means they might actually fix it before their next monthly update!

You might try manually installing each update, in turn, & rebooting (if
prompted) to see if you can determine which update caused the problems.
(Don't bother with the Malicious Software Removal Tool.)

Given your desciption of the problems, I'd also install of the Windows
updates before attempting to install any of the Office updates.

Hi James

The likeness stops where you suffered with the failure of IE 7. I suffered
with the complete loss of functionality of Windows Explorer - oddly my
Internet Explorer 7 carried on robustly.

Cheers

Hi PA Bear
Thanks for "bearing" out my thoughts. Doesn't feel great when I have to do
the sort of work that Microsoft could / should have cleaned up before
rerlease but as you say - it really is the only way to identify which update
module is stuffing my system.

Two thoughts occur -
1) Would Microsoft want to hear from me as to which module causes the failure?
2) If the module that has to be left off is a security patch, how vulnerable
will this leave me and would Microsoft compensate me if I suffered as a
result of the inability to apply effective security protocols as a result of
inabilities with Microsoft that are out of my control.
3) Would Microsoft be willing to recompmpense me for a) the days work put
into identifying their faulty patch - and b) the day I lose from my employers
at the same time?

If I had a Million pounds right now I'd be down the bookies placing my bet
on the response for I'm prety sure I already know the answers - if the
wording of the response.

Cheers
Dave

Update on the situation - Feb 16th @ 02:56hrs,
Have now re-installed all the updates 1 by 1, stopping to re-boot where
needed and creating a system restore anfetr checking each installation did
not crerate any havoc.
So - 18 updates, 18 system restore points and half a dozen reboots later and
we are all fine.

Thanks for posting back. Perhaps the update that caused your problem(s) had
been tweaked/revised between the time you originally installed it and when
you manually installed it.
