Vista running slow (as is everyone's ?)
took a look at task manager and counted 15 svchost.exe running
I added the command line so can see where they're being called

but it does seem to be a lot
have run spybot and cc cleaner to no benefit

any ideas?

Try installing and running Process Explorer to identify what's being run by
svchost. It gives MUCH more detail than Task Manager.

That depends completely on what you are running. And 15 is not unusual
If you run Process Explorer as suggested, right click on the process(es
in question and go to Properties. That will give you additiona
information. But hovering over the various svchost.exes will give yo
already a first clue

PS: Why is your Vista slow? What is your CPU and your RAM? I have neve
seen it as being slow

I've run it, but I'm too inexperienced to understand what it's telling
me

Hmm, I suggest the following. Run Process Explorer again and click o
CPU in the header. That will bring all the CPU intensive processes t
the top. See which processes use the most % of time and post those her
- with the percentage number (but not the "system idle" process - tha
is the unused cpu time). Then we can have a look at it. The number o
your svchost.exes is probably Ok and your system as described should b
able to cope with Vista. It is not a race car, but an averag
configuration
One additional thing you could check is the startup programs. I sugges
you use WinPatrol for that ( 'BillP Studios: WinPatrol 2009
(http://www.winpatrol.com/) ). msconfig is too messy to do anything
Maybe you can take a snip of the startup window in WinPatrol and post i
here (drag it down far enough so that it shows all the startups). I a
sure there are some that need not be there and unnecessarily eat you
RAM

Only 2GB? My Vista runs fine but I have a core duo with 4GB. Mine shows
about 1.5GB being used just on starting up. Are you running the aero theme?
You may want to disable all possible bells and whistles or upgrade your RAM.

I run 2 gig with all the bells and whistles turned on and have no
problem. Dual core 2.33 HP machine. I did turn off the automatic
search stuff.
