I installed 5 optional updates on my Vista Home Premium PC and now it is
refusing to boot up, keeps restarting and presenting me with the options
screen, tried safe mode, safe mode command prompt etc but no Joy. I cant even
get it to boot from the DVD to repair the installation. Anyone else having
problems? (I know some are on other forums) anyone figured out a fix?

Which one of the five caused the problem?
What are the KB numbers so others can be warned before they chance a
download?
Were these optional ones needed?

I am not sure what the updates were, I have it set for auto update for
critical patches, these were 4 optional windows patches and a new updated
driver for the video card. although in some other forums people are
mentioning Update # 941600

Without some details like KB numbers, error codes, event viewer error codes
it is not easy.
It is not a good idea to let MS just download what it thinks you want
without you first reading what they are.
See if anybody has similar in any of the Vista groups in that web interface
discussion group.
This update group mainly covers security/critical updates.
Was the GP update for Ati?
I still do not see why you dont know what these were or find them on your
system. I dont run Vista so would not know where I would expect to see
them.

I just installed them because they were there, stupid I know but I was on my
way to the pub :-) I cant find them on the system because I cant boot into
anything at all, PC simply re-boots and goes back to the start-up menu
choices, cant even get it to boot of the DVD ROM

I know I should check things out before I install them but I figured "Hey,
these are from Microsoft so they'll be OK" (or maybe I should have thought a
little more about what I just said?)

Anyway, not to worry, New hard drive, new install, try to recover some of
the files I have on the old drives!

yesterday I installed the driver update and I needed to restart my computer
to activate it. at the sign in screen it wouldn't let me do anything. To
get rid of the update what I did was I turned my computer completely off
manually and turned the power back on. I pressed f8 repeatedly until a black
screen came up and I selected "fix my computer" follow the directions until
you get to a screen with about six different options on it. select for "use
system restore to restore your computer to a previous point in time". when
you install an update it creates a system restore point for you automatically
so you should see one for the date and time you installed the updates.
select it and it will restore your computer to right before you installed the
updates and you should be fine after a quick restart. I was.

Here is my experience -- Microsoft Update listed an optional update
consisting of an ATI Express 3GIO Filter Driver, even though my PC has a
NVIDIA card! I went ahead and accepted the update, and then everything went
screwy. I rebooted in Safe Mode, then used the last good Restore Point via
System Recover in Vista which saved the day. Something must have happened to
Microsoft's servers on November 15th that made them misread our hardware
profiles...

You installed a driver update for hardware not made by Microsoft - do you
always do this? It is probably out of date in any case - never install ANY
driver for anything that is not Microsoft made - always go to the
manufacturers web site - but only if you have a problem with a current
driver - if it aint broke then dont fix.

You are not the only one caught by this offer.
What is worse than downloading a driver from MS?
Downloading one for a piece of hardware that is not in your computer.- I
guess.
You were very lucky to escape that one - glad to read you did.
