I really hope that someone can help me.

I've had computer 3 weeks. Initially (first day) all udates fine but for
past 2 weeks 17 fail every time. I have had a range of error messages
(80070641, 80240016) but current one is 80070652-windows update encountered
an unknown error.

I am running on vista and microsoft 1 care. Have disabled firewall etc but
nothing works.

Help! Please!

Error message when you try to install updates from the Windows Update Web
site or from the Microsoft Update Web site: "0x80240016":
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957307

Did you install OneCare before or after these problems started?

You should NEVER connect to the internet without the OneCare Firewall or the
Windows Firewall enabled (one, not both)!!

Hi.
The latest error code is 80070652 not one below.
I installed one care on day I bought computer and around 40 updates
installed successfully. It was the next day I started having problems.
Someone has suggested uninstalling one care (but the same person told me to
disable fire wall for 30 mins to try intalling again!?)

Any more suggestions?

When I have looked at the Remote Procedure Call I have changed it many times
but it keeps going back to "windows update - automatic(delayed). Why could it
be delaying?

Alisa, most brand-new computers come with a (30-90 day) free-trial of an
anti-virus application or a security suite preinstalled, frequently a Norton
or McAfee application. Was one of these free-trials preinstalled on your
computer? Is/was it a Norton or McAfee application?

When you install OneCare, it usually detects the presence of another
security application and prompts you to uninstall it before proceeding with
the install of OneCare. Did you get such a prompt and did you uninstall
it...or is it still installed? (If it's installed, it'd be listed in
"Install Programs" window.)

80070652 errors are usually encountered when an Office update fails to
install. Is, e.g., Office 2007 installed?

Don't be distracted though: The important error was the 0x80240016 error you
encountered. Have you looked at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/957307 yet
and tried the RESOLUTION for Vista?

Hi Ailsa - it may not be of help, only to know you are not the only one
having problems with updates. I tried to download the latest updates and I
got the message above. I can't find anything on this error message either.
So, I don't kow what the problem is, but when it comes to security updates, I
don't like to wait too long to get them installed. Jeanne

Hi Ailsa,

I'm sure someone has already helped you resolve this, but I just happened to
be reading your post and have been having the same problem, but solved it.

For whatever reason, the process msiexec.exe gets stuck open.
Unfortunately, it seems to get stuck this way A LOT. All I had to do was
open the windows task manager (alt+ctrl+del), go to processes, select to show
processes from all users, scroll to msiexec.exe (there may even be two of
them), and click End Process. This isn't the first time I've had to do this
to get something to install, either, but it always seems to work for me.

Best of luck!
