18 security updates won't install

I hav'nt been able to install and updat since July 15, 2005. It downloads the
updates, but when you hit install it says "windows has failed to install
updates"!
I have tried almost everything (windows 2000) but I can't get any to
install, even individually! Here's what won't

Open the WindowsUpdate.log located in the WINNT folder. Look for error
codes associated with the failed installations. The more recent entries
will be down towards the bottom.
Then visit the Windows Update site and click the Get help and support
link in the left frame. In the right frame click on Try solving your
problem with the Troubleshooter link.
Locate the error messages listed and try the suggested resolutions.
If no joy, post back with the error codes you located.

MowGreen, may I too ask for your help? I went to the UpdateLog, I got the
error codes (1544, 792), and then I went to the "Try solving your problem
with the Troubleshooter" link. I did not see any way to look up those error
code numbers. No keywords got any result whatsoever. What am I doing wrong?

MowGreen! I got KB904706 to install by simply using the task manager to shut
down every process that it let me shut down. I ended up with a blank blue
screen instead of a desktop, and at that point it installed. SO I restarted,
and everything seems peachy--I confirmed it's installed.

However, that did not solve the problem I was originally concerned about
anyway, which is that ever since I installed these updates my Media Player
will not play MP3s. I get a message: "No such interface supported." When I
click on "details," I get "No further information is available."

IBM ThinkPad, Win2KP.

Any suggestions?
