18 Windows Updates on May 2, 2008!!

On May 2, 2008 I received 18!! updates from MS. I have since been
experiencing a computer that lags, MS programs (eg,Word, Excel, Photo Editor)
not responding properly and/or closing as slow as a slug, sending error
messages which translate to a MS response saying "you need to upgrade to MS
Office 2007". I am absolutely baffled as to WHY 18 updates were installed
!!! I don't normally to a Custom install, instead choosing Express, but man
I wish I had !!! I have had auto updates ALWAYS ON since 2005. Never have I
experienced any problems with Windows applications. But now, my computer is
not performing up to snuff and it has been on going since May 2.
HP Pavilion zv5000, Win XP Home SP2 (will not install SP3 until some of the
bugs are worked out!!), AMD processor, 3200+ 64, ZA Free, avast! 4 Home.
I use the computer for emails, and some SAFE web surfing. I have searched
the web and other computer forums and have come up empty handed with answers.

I would like to know if anyone has experienced this "issue" and if there is
any answer as to why 18 updates were required!!!!! And why they are creating
problems with my computer.

Is Automatic Updates enabled? Has it always been enabled?

How to configure and use Automatic Updates in WinXP:

If Windows Update offered you 18 updates, I'd suspect that (1) Automatic
Updates had been disabled, (2) you hadn't checked for updates manually in
quite some time and/or (3) you (recently) chose to make Microsoft Update
your default update source and had not been updating your Office
applications manually via Office Update website.

(With Microsoft Update as your default, you're offered updates for Windows,
MS Office, and many Windows Live applications.)

There's also the possibility that the Custom scan offered and you chose to
install Recommended and/or Optional updates that the Express option doesn't.

Post any error messages you're getting in their entirety, please.

Also go to Windows Update website and check your Update History, then give
us an idea of what the 18 updates were.

I have this problem too! I restored to the SP2 but it still doesnt work. I
turn the laptop on and it does that little scan under Windows XP and than it
stops and doesnt go no where. What shoud i do? Please need help!

The following is the list of Updates of May 2, 2008. As I mentioned I have
ALWAYS had Auto Update on since 2005. I check regularly. I chose the Express
install - not custom.
In addition I have added the latest Updates received.
Please Note that MS states that SP3 was installed. This is incorrect. It
has not installed on my computer. Dont know why, but I do not see it in the
updates other than the MS Update website under History. (but I am rather glad
after reviewing several websites and reading about the problems.)
I apologize for not having the error message but will make note of any
future ones.

*Office* XP Service Pack 3 is NOT *Windows* XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), my
friend.

The fact that all of the updates installed between 01 & 15 May 2008 are
Office Updates can only be explained two ways:

1. On or shortly before 01 May 2008, you (re)installed Office XP; or

2. On or shortly before 01 May 2008, you went to Windows Update website
(http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and clicked on the "Get Microsoft
Update today!" link, which made Microsoft Update your default update source
so that Automatic Updates would offer you updates for Office XP.
