19 updates for new Dell XP?

I just purchased a new Dell 9100 with XP pre-installed. The system prompted
me to update Windows which resulted in the download of 3 items: Update for
Windows XP(KB898461), Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool(KB892130) and
Microsoft Windows Installer 3.1. After downloading the preceeding items, it
told me that Windows was up-to-date. I decided to go to the Microsoft Website
to scan for any additonal updates, which resulted in 19 'high-priority items'
ranging from a 2004 Framework update to various security updates for xp. It
also included a cumulative security update for IE xp SP2. I'm confused. If
this system was just assembled with XP a few weeks ago, why am I getting all
of these updates? The Dell support rep confused me even more by telling me
not to install the old ones as they could mess things up. I am running XP
Media Center Edition v5.1 build 2600.xpsp-sp2 etc... Please..I need an expert
to set me straight. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!!! Thank you
Bryan

Bryan;
You should install all Critical Updates.
If you go to Windows Update, the necessary updates will be identified and
installed.

The computer most likely only has SP-2 with no later updates and this is
normal for the major OEMs.
Otherwise you should ask Dell why they do not install all the updates, that
is Dells choice.

They may be using a image for your system, they should really do a WU before
shipping the system but like Jupiter said, that's Dell's choice

By default new Dell machines have a service confusingly similar to but not
the same as MS Windows (or Microsoft) Update. The Dell service notifies you
of both new Dell and MS Windows updates, but IMO it's seriously deficient in
the timely notification of the latter (and so I've removed this Dell
service).

You posted at 9:36AM PDT on 9 Aug-05. You should be aware that a new batch
of updates was released later in the day so check back at Windows/Microsoft
Update ASAP.

Thank you for all of your replies. I downloaded all of the updates (whew- 23
in total) except the newest one (cum patch for IE/xp) which hung. Microsoft's
time estimate is 3 minutes. I hit the cancel button after very little
progress was made 20 minutes after starting. Maybe there is something wrong
with this patch??? Again, I appreciate your assistance. Robear, it's good to
hear from you again ( you helped me big time last Winter). Hope you are well.

*23* updates? Man, were you ever behind! Get that Automatic Update thingy
configured properly, Bryan!

The IE patch is quite large (~3.6MB) and is one that *everybody* needed, so
it's not unusual that the download was slow-verging-on-stop.

Know, too, that all of the download-for-manual-install versions of the IE
patch were buggy, were eventually pulled and not made available again till
late today (Wed., 9 Aug-05). So all of these users turned to Windows Update
for it along with zillions of others.

Yes, all is well & thanks for your kind words. I think we ran into each
other here http://snipurl.com/gv7g as well as here http://snipurl.com/gv7h.

All the best,
