Vista: Works 8 KB955428 fails because I need the Works8.msi from the CD I
don't have....I updated to 8 from Works 2004 (have that CD)
One XP: KB949901 Sec. Upd for Excel Viewer 2003 + as above
The other XP: Works8 as above but strangely it accepted a security update
for excel Viewer 2003 but a diferent KB; 951589 which wasn't offered to the
other XP.

As a matter of interest, you have the original Works 2004 CD but not the
upgrade CD for Works 8, why don't you have that CD?

As for excel Viewer 2003, it probably accepted the viewer update because it
was able to locate the original source files for the install of Excel Viewer
2003. For the computer not accepting the Excel Viewer 2003 update, just
download the latest Excel Viewer 2003 file and use that.

Peter,

I was having the same problem installing KB955428. The only difference is
that I'm using a Windows XP SP3 machine.

Try installing the update using this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en
I don't know if there is an download option for your location -- Canada, but
try seeing if there is one. (I think "KB955428_zh-CN.cab" is for China? Or is
the "CN" for Canada?)

I downloaded and installed "KB955428_en-US.cab", rebooted and got a balloon
informing me that an update was ready. I installed the update, when to
Microsoft Update and the update was that not installing -- KB955428 -- now
appears as a successful update.

Good luck,

Sterling

PS I wasn't prompted to insert the Works 8 CD/DVD.

I unzipped it (US version) and then tried to install. Got a UAC prompt and
that was it....nothing else happened and it isn't in the list of updates.

I tell a lie...it is in "Installed Updates" after all, but does not appear
in "Update History" because I guess Vista, being different (& extremely
exasperating at times), thinks anything manually installed is not an update.
