Help!

I installed the new windows update, now device manager repots code 41 it
can't find hardware. First noticed as wireless keyboard went away. Tried
resore, and it wouldn't, tried uninstall, but it won't uninstall everything.
Tried reinstalling drivers for keyboard and for chipset, that didn't fix it.

I have already spent hours on this...

Thanks

I noticed the same problem that SonoranBill has. I have a Logitech WAVE
keyboard and mouse that quit working after KB 943055, 946026 & 944533 were
installed. I have a P4 2.66G processor, running 1 Gig RAM, XP Pro w/SP2 and
have been extremely diligent about installing all updates as soon as they are
available. I looked up these updates on the microsoft website and they
apparently relate to ActiveX and OLE problems. It is possible that my USB
controller has quit functioning, but the Hardware Manager reports all
installed and functioning properly. I have not checked for a BIOS update
yet. I will check for updates and report back. In the meantime, any help is
appreciated.

More info, main board is a MSI 865PE Neo2-P (socket 478). I did check with
MSI and I have the current BIOS for this board. I did update the Intel 865PE
chipset.

OK, I thought someone might get back to me with an email or something...
here are the particulars:

This is a Gateway GM5076E,

Processor: Intel Pentium 4, 3200 MHz 200MHz external bus,

Bios: Intel Corp. NT94510J.15A.0099.2005.1215.1455 12/15/2005,

Memory: 2048MB physical 90% free resources 4 memory slots, 0 free
(512+512+512+512)

Video: Graphics Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM) Screen
Area/Colors: 1280x1024 pixels, 16 million colors Monitor: Dell 65542

Drives: C:\ (NTFS) 472772MB total, 300120MB free
D:\ (NTFS) 4165MB total, 2365MB free
E:\ (FAT32) 4157MB total, 2384MB free
F:\ (NTFS) 472772MB total, 307547MB free
P:\ Remote network
Q:\ Remote network
R:\ CD-ROM/CD-RW or DVD Drive
S:\ CD-ROM/CD-RW or DVD Drive
X:\ Remote network
Y:\ Remote network
Z:\ Remote network

Network and Modem:
(modem) CXT PCI Soft Data Fax Modem with SmartCP
(net) Intel Intel PRO/100 VE Network Connection
(net) Microsoft Direct Parallel
(net) Microsoft 1394 Net Adapter

[note that USB adapter is not mentioned here...]

Operating System:
Windows XP SP2 (Windows XP 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2)
Original setup date: 5/16/2006
DirectX Version: 5.03.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Swap file managed by Windows
File cache managed by Windows

If I go to the device manager, under Universal serial bus controllers I see
4 USB universal host controllers - 27C8, 27C9, 27CA, 27CB and 1 USB2
enhanced universal host controller - 27CC

Opening each controller:

Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C8
Location: PCI bus 0, device 29, function 0

Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27C9
Location: PCI bus 0, device 29, function 1

Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CA
Location: PCI bus 0, device 29, function 2

Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller - 27CB
Location: PCI bus 0, device 29, function 3

Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) USB2 Enhanced Host Controller - 27CC
Location: PCI bus 0,device 29, function 7

All the controllers have yellow ! tags and exhibit device status:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot
find the hardware device. (Code 41)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

The driver is dated 5/23/2005, version 7.0.0.1020

The USB hardware is fine since I can operate my wireless keyboard to access
the bios on boot up. This problem occured immediately after I allowed the
automatic update to proceed. I have tried re-installing the keyboard driver,
and the chipset driver with no success. I have uninstalled all the updates
Microsoft will allow to be uninstalled. Some updates cannot be uninstalled,
and restore will not go back.

I am totally stuck, and I require USB2 for my work. I do not want to rebuild
my OS, as it will take days to setup all my apps again, justto have this
update blow me away again...

Please help!

Thanks...

I resolved this problem by uninstalling HDD Port Monitoring Software.
Microsoft most have overwritten something it needed.

Was HDD Port Monitoring Software part of the Dell software package or
belonged to someone else? I do not think I have that on my computer, unless
it is part of the BIOS.

My USB controllers all show up, no yellow "!". I tried removing all
controllers, restarting the computer and let it autoinstall the drivers. No
joy. I am off to try to uninstall KB943055. KB946026 & KB944533 to see if
that fixes my problem.

No HDD is third party software for monitoring port activity for development
purposes. I had recently installed this, and everything was fine, until MS
came along and overwrote something... HDD eval was expired so I'm not putting
it back in... obviously they or MS or both "broke the rules". I have caused
myself similar USB problems in the past by installing USB software,
especially stuff that interacts directly with, or replaces, USB drivers. Wish
I could be more help... Good luck...
