Thanks all for your help

I want to setup 2 domain DFS root on the same a windows 2003 domain member
server (FS02).
Example: on fs02's E: drive, with 2 share folder like:
E:\DFS-RooT01 and
E:\DFS-Root02.

I can create first domain DFS root on E:\DFS-Root01 but when I create the
second domain DFS root on E:\DFS-Root02 then I got the error like "This is
not supported"

Does create more than 1 DFS root on the same host is not supported?
And Is it support create a second DFS root that point to a subfolder of the
first DFS-Root? I have try it but it doesn't work.

I can create the second domain DFS root if it is pointed to a share on
another member server?

Thanks for your help

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903651
"You cannot create more than one domain-based DFS namespace on a computer
that is running Windows Server 2003, Standard Edition"

Thanks all your help.

After applied the fix, I can created 2 domain dfs root on the same host.
But if the following case support? I want to create the second dfs root
under a subfolder of the 1 dfs root.

- create the first domain dfs root on FS01 pointed to its D:\DFS01
- create a subfolder on FS01's D:\ like D:\DFS01\Departmentt
- create the second dmain dfs root on FS01 pointed to its D:\DFS01\Department

Thanks for your help

Patrick,
You don't edit the dfs root folders at all. These are the virtual directory
structures created by DFS.
But you can point one root to another to create additional branching.

- Create the first dfs root on the Share \\server\root1.
- Share some data on the server as MyShare1.
- In the dfs Root1 create a target of \\server\myshare1
- Create a second dfs root on the Share \\server\root2
- In the dfs Root2 create a target of \\domain\root1.

Hope that helps,
Anthony

Its hard to see why you want to do this. Remember that the DRSRoot is simply the
names and these point to ordinary shares through the link targets. I would
expect great confusion within DFS root replication (not data replication) even
if you can do what you want.
There is no reason why you cannot create \\DFSRoot1\Folder\Department -->
\\server1\department
and a second DFS root like \\DFSRoot2\Department --> \\server1\department
i.e. two independent DFS names for the same target UNC.

Thanks all for your help.

Because my file server is almost out of disk space, I need to move some
folder to anohter server and want to keep the folder tree structure.

I've tested your suggestion, it works thanks.

In my environment, my file server is just windows 2003 (without any service
pack), and I'm using one std dfs root only:

Without the windows 2003 sp1 and the DFS hotfix (you suggested to installed
before):
- can I just keep the STD dfs root and create a new Domain DFS root?
- and then add a link in the Std DFS root point to the 2nd domain dfs root
- At the 2nd domain dfs root, add link that point to share on another server.

ie
Std DFS root1--> department (link to domain DFS root2 on the same server)

domain DFS root 2 --> Marketing( individual folder link to share folder on
another server)

Thanks for your help

Does this configure ok or not?

Thanks for your help.

Patrick

No, but that's exactly what you can do with two domain roots. You can have
one with a link to departments, and then within that one target can be the
dfs path to another root. So \\domain\departments\marketing would also be
\\domain\marketing.
Hope that helps,
Anthony,

Thanks Anthony.

Does Windows 98 can access domain dfs root share?

any difference If the Windows98 client access the domain dfs through:
- \\servername\share
- \\domain.local\share

Thanks for your help
