2 of the most recent updates for vista simply will not install

      03-20-2008
for the past 8 months windows automatic update was working fine, but these
last two just wont install. no changes to my computer have been made.

the updates im trying to install:

KB947821 3/18/2008 Error Code 5 This one downloads but fails after
initializing installation

KB946041 3/11/2008 Error Code 800B0100 This one wont even download.

Im pretty much stuck, so any help would be much appreciated.

see if you can manually install it - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821
There's a download link etc. and how to manually install it.

In the past I've associated an Error 5 with a permissions error but that was
with WinXP - sorry just thinking out loud.

Perhaps after running the above update, it will fix the other problem.

I'm having the same problem here... it's really annoying, because it appears
"correctly installed" at least 10 times since yesterday 03/18, and still the
windows update popup keeps asking me to intall this "important update".

I'll try Taurarian's suggestion and see if it finally stops bugging me...
I'm crossing fingers now...

oh boy. when i went to the page you sent the link for, it suggested that
checkSUR might be causing the problem and gave instructions on how to edit
the registry to delete checkSUR and then download ans reinstall it from
microsoft download center. BUT NOW I CANT FIND CHECKSUR ANYWHERE ON THE
INTERNET TO DOWNLOAD AND REINSTALL IT!!!

im so screwed.

i did download the standalone installer for the update though. it
initializes, and starts to install it but stays at 0%.

any ideas now?

ok, i used system restore to get my registry back to how it was. i have both
of the stand-alone update installers sitting on my desktop. ill let you know
how it goes. i hope i can at least get the important one installed... the
other one is just recommended.

but what i want to know is why is windows update effing up in the first
place? can i email M$ about this for support?

Standalone KB947821 3/18/2008 now says it doesnt apply to my system.
Standalone KB946041 3/11/2008 simply runs and eventually says some of the
updates (the one im trying to install) were not installed.

so now in my control panels windows update im sitting on one recommended and
one important update that just wont install.

who am i supposed to contact for support that DOESNT cost 60 bucks?

Oh my Lordy!
What the hang's going on here?
I'm having the EXACT same problems, have tried the EXACT same fixes & have
got to the EXACT same place as you are, which is nowhere!
If this danged update is so important as it shows in the update list then
why isn't it important enough for Microsoft to fix it!
Surely if we are all having the same issues, the there's obviously something
major amiss, or are we all simply having mass delusions?
